Mangalore, Oct 11: The first district peace committee meeting was held at the deputy commissioner's office here on Tuesday October 10 to assess the situation of violence in the city.

Superintendent of Police B Dayananda, addressing the large gathering, cited the reason for the violence as lack of obedience among the youth in the age group of 15-25 years. He said that the youth must be guided properly with adequate education so that they learn to live harmoniously.

MLA N Yogish Bhat suggested that a ban must be imposed on bandhs and that the district administration should put a hold on illegal transportation of cattle.

Several people urged the setting up of peace committees at the grass root levels so as to control instances of violence in the future.

District Kannada Sahitya Parishat president Pradeep Kumar Kalkura requested the district administration to extend the last date for monthly payments of bills like electricity, water etc as people could not get out of their houses for the past few days.

Leaders of both communities urged the administration to take a decision on the slaughter house regarding its location, transportation of raw material and its functioning.

Before the meeting commenced, a one minute silence was observed in memory of those who had lost their lives during the riots.
