Panaji, Oct 10: The Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) has welcomed the the directive of the apex court ordering reforms in the police force, following shameless dilly-dallying by the political parties over the years.

In a press note, spokesman and general secretary of NCP Surendra Furtado, said that the reforms in the country’s police administration would not only protect the police from being  minons of the politicians in power but ensure that greater justice is done to the citizens.

The NCP spokesman pointed out that an erstwhile chief minister had actually saffronised the police force because he was aware that having the Home department under his thumb would tantamount to having the entire state under his control and thereby hold sway on the  running of the state.

In another case, the NCP spokesman pointed out that years ago a minister actually sat in the police chamber to ensure that the police official delayed on rushing to the rescue of two brothers being attacked by a violent mob, despite hectic telephone calls. The brothers were eventually lynched.

In yet another pointer, Furtado said that the arrest of those behind  the attack on Goa University professor Dr Joe D’Souza  is  still delayed  because of the culprits’ political connections, despite a directive from the court.

Besides directing the states to set up a state security commissions,  the apex court has instructed that Investigations be separated  from Law and Order, besides  establishing a police panel to decide transfers and promotions.

This is good for the police to regain its credibility, which has been eroded due to political interference, Furtado added.
