Udupi, Oct 1: D.T. Pai, former Chairman & Managing Director of Syndicate Bank, a giant banker of the region, passed away at KMC Hospital on Tuesday.
He was 72 and is survived by wife, son and daughter.
Dayananda Thimmappa Pai, popularly known as D T Pai originally hailed from Honnavar, Uttara Kannada district. Pai after his education in Kumta, migrated to Mumbai to take up an employment in West coast paper mills to support his family. He continued his studies in Mumbai.
He started his banking career in Reserve Bank of India in 1963. He became commerce post-graduate from Bombay University and a Certified Associate of Indian Institute of Bankers.
Pai joined Syndicate Bank in April 1969. He was closely associated with implementation of Lead Bank Scheme and various other schemes during his stint with Syndicate bank. He worked in various senior positions before he became the General Manager.
He moved to Union Bank of India in August 1996 as Executive Director. In the year 2000 Government of India appointed him as Chairman & Managing Director of Syndicate Bank. He introduced the ‘Core Banking Solution’ in 2001, a state of the art banking service in Syndicate Bank, the first public sector bank to do so.
Pai is the author of three acclaimed books ‘Overview of Banking Development 1947-2007’, ‘Overview of Financial Inclusion and Micro Credit’ and ‘Banking Development and Challenges’.
He was in the boards of Unit trust of India, T A Pai Institute of Management, Manipal University, Indian banks association and various associations and institutions,
He was honoured with the New Year Award 2011for Professional Acumen by the Manipal University.
Pai who stayed at Ananthnagar in Manipal dedicated his entire life as a banker for the betterment of society.
