Asiad basketball: Indian women to fight for fifth position


Incheon, Sep 29 (IANS): The Indian women's basketball team will be fighting it out for the fifth position after winning the semi-final game for the 5th-8th position in the 17th Asian Games at the Hwaseong Sports Complex Gymnasium here Monday.

India defeated Mongolia 68-50, leading in all the four quarters, 19-14, 33-23, 55-38, 68-50. Indian shooting guard Prashanti Singh distinguished herself, becoming the team's highest scorer with 17 points.

They now face Kazakhstan for the 5th-6th final match Wednesday. Kazakhstan beat Thailand 62-49, winning 14-18, 34-26, 45-34 and 62-49.

Earlier, India were outclassed 37-70 by Japan in the quarter-final Sunday that ended their medal hopes in the event.
