Bangalore: Heavy rain throws normal life out of gear

Bangalore, Sep 26 (DHNS): All hell broke loose on Thursday night as unprecedented rain of about 130 mm pounded the City, leaving a trail of mess.

TV news channels claimed a person was swept away and many trees were uprooted. Hundreds of vehicles were found submerged on streets as well as apartment basements. Several streets were under three to four feet of water.

Water gushed into many houses in low-lying areas, forcing people to take shelter atop roofs.

Heavy rain threw traffic out of gear, with jams reported across the City till midnight. At many places, vehicles could not move an inch forward for hours together. From Anil Kumble Circle to Trinity Circle, vehicles were moving at snail’s pace.

Hundreds of vehicles were stranded for hours from Rajajeshwarinagar gate to Kengeri due to the breakdown of a bus and a lorry. A similar situation was witnessed at Majestic, Rajarajeshwari Nagar and Okalipuram.

Clogged storm water drains added to the problem. Unable to bear the water pressure, many manholes overflowed. Construction materials of the ongoing TenderSURE road project were washed away.

While the houses in low-lying areas were the most affected, temples were not spared either.

People struggled to reach their destinations as there were no autorickshaws or cabs on the road after 7:30 pm. Buses were also not available.

Three to five feet water filled up Rhenius Street, Shivananda Circle Junction, Jayanagar, Double Road, Majestic and Cunningham Road among others. Rainwater mixed with sewage gushed into houses at Anepalya, Ejipura, Neelasandra, Austin Town and Frazer Town.

There were reports of fallen trees from Bannerghatta Main Road, Marenahalli 18th Main Road and near Jayanagar Police Station.

Water-clogging was reported at KP Agrahara, Magadi Road and on JC Road at Journalist Colony. Drains were blocked at Shantinagar.

Bangaloreans would remember back in 2004-05, we had a similar late monsoon with heavy rains after August. Overflowing drains, water logged roads, stuck vehicles and washed out roads. Looks like 10 yrs on, Bangalore is no better what it was in 2004.

Horrible state of affairs just with 130 mm of rain just imagine what the scene would have been if it had rained nearly 1000 mm in 24 hours as happened that fateful day in July 2005

The real culprits for this mess to take place is BBMP . They do not do their job and the outcome of this is flooding . The pouramikars instead of collecting the garbage after sweeping , they make their job easy by sweeping the plastics and mud into the drain . when this is practiced almost every day the drains will be filled with plastics and mud and choke them not allowing rain water to flow . BDA is also partially to be blamed for the same . Barath Lal Meena is the only Commissioner who took stringent action against BBMP workers and Contractors so far but he was transfered by the netas because he was vigilant about the corrupt activities of the BBMP Workers & Contractors .

Experienced a Little of the rains in Mangalore..... Waters flooded the street reasons is the poor drainage system in the city. Authority (BBMP) needs to take a serious note of it. or else may lead to further serious causalities
