Food park opens in Tumkur: PM asks cola cos to add fruit juice to soft drinks

Tumkur, Sep 24 (PTI): Prime Minister Narendra Modi today asked soft drink makers like Pepsi to try and mix aerated drinks with 5 per cent fruit juice to help distressed farmers find a new market for their produce.

"We drink Pepsi, Coca-Cola and I do not know how many similar beverages are available in the market. The trade runs into billions of rupees. I have asked the companies if they can blend 5 per cent natural fruit juice in the beverages they make," Modi said after inaugurating the country's first integrated food park here.

"I am not asking for much. If 5 per cent of juice from fruits produced by our farmers is added, the farmer will not be forced to search for a market to sell. A single decision can ensure billions of rupees of trade," he said.

Modi added that he has already asked the Central government's research bodies to work on the possibility of blending cola drinks, which are widely considered unhealthy, with natural fruit juice.

By doing so, he said, farmers will not be forced to dump their produce and let it go waste because of unremunerative prices and the country can save Rs 30-40,000 crore by reducing the wastage of food products through processing.

According to a report by Indian Council for Research on International Economic Relations released last December, the consumption of non-alcoholic beverages is expected to increase by 16.5-19 per cent over the next three years in the country.

The report says corporate manufacturers of non-alcoholic beverages are expected to grow at an annual rate of 16.5 per cent and non-corporate manufacturers at 19 per cent.

The estimates are based on an assumed gross domestic product growth of 7 per cent, which is much higher than the 5 per cent growth several economists have forecast.

The country's beverage market is largely unorganised, with nearly 75 per cent of the demand serviced by companies in the unorganised sector.

In his 20-minute speech, Modi stressed on the importance of proper storage, processing and value additions, which will be done at the park.

He also underscored the need for adopting more scientific methods of farming.
Meanwhile, over Rs 250 crore has already been invested by the Kishore Biyani-led Future Group in the park and it has plans to invest over Rs 750 crore more over 2-3 years.

Besides, the company plans to open two more such parks at Kharagpur in West Bengal and another in Madhya Pradesh as it expands into the Fast Moving Consumer Goods (FMCG) space with its own food brands.

The farmer can get his produce to the food park, which will help in providing proper storage and process it to ensure a longer shelf life. Value additions like turning it into ready to eat items like rotis and pani puris, will also be done, Biyani said.

Minister of State for Food Processing Harsimrat Kaur Badal said the government is planning to open four more such parks across the country this fiscal and take the number up to 17 over time.

Kaur said such facilities will help control the worrisome food inflation, which has been persistently hovering at the double digit mark, leading to a slew of problems like a high interest rate regime.

At the event, Modi said his administration is committed to providing the necessary infrastructure, including facilities to export food products by sea.

He said there is an increased awareness about Indian food globally and the companies here should leverage that and make ready-to-eat products like curries.

Modi also stressed on the need to capitalise on the opportunity presented by the demand for organic food, saying regions along the Himalayas and in the north east, untouched by modern farming till now, can produce the required stuff.

With growth being the rallying theme, Modi said the country can progress only if the purchasing power of the villagers grows.

What is the necessity to mix fruit juice with Coke and Pepsi??

Why beg Pepsi and Coca Cola to use fruit juices in their colas?

We have notable desi companies such as Godrej, Dabur, Parle etc. who are already using agricultural produce to manufacture their soft drinks and other food products too.

The need of the hour is to produce 100 % fruit juices, pulps, canned fruits, jams, sauces etc. for local and export market, for which there is great potential, and at the same time will be a great boost to Indian farmers.

Indian farmers also must be freed from the fists of greedy middle men who are manipulators and are depriving the profits due to our farmers.

We should not treat refrigerated trucks, vans, storage facilities as luxuries anymore, and reduce choking taxes on the same too.

I agree with you Mr. Dinesh Poojary. We all have grown up safe and sound depending mostly on home medicine. Even if we go to Govt. hospitals, we were given some red syrup and some small packets with white powder. Later on I came to know that these were cough syrup and paracetamol. Trust factor used to be the curing element.

Now a days people want short-cuts and are heavily dependent on allopathy, which often taken will gradually kills our immune system.

I think all parents should start using Ayurvedic (home medicine) or Homeopathy medicine for their children from early age itself so that their immune system is not affected.

We should come out of our ignorance that "GHARKI MURGI DAAL KE BARABAR" as otherwise the younger generation will become KHOKLA ANDARSE DHOKLA BAHARSE.

Effects of Carbonated Drink & Fruit Juice on Salivary pH of Children:
Thirty nine children age 8 to 12 years were assessed for changes in salivary pH at different interval after consumption of carbonated drink & fruit juice mix on two different days. Changes in salivary pH were checked at different interval of immediate, 5 minutes, 10 minutes, 15 minutes & 30 minutes.
Result: Study showed higher fall in immediate salivary pH after mixed fruit juice when compared to cold drink. Immediate salivary pH value ranged from 3.21 to 6.86 with a mean value of 5.47±0.78 (SD) for cold drink where for mixed fruit juice it was 3.26 to 6.53 with a mean value of 4.89±0.97 (SD).
Conclusion: Present study suggested that there is a decline in the salivary pH after consumption of both types of beverage. There was higher fall in the salivary pH in the case of fruit juice when compared to carbonated drink. Regular consumption of such drinks should be discouraged.

IJSS is a bogus journal which has no scientific citation at all and picked up from google, great. And according to thier report (page 65) pH. insignificantly fell to arround pH 5 both in group 1 (Soft drink gropu) and gropu 2 (Mixed fruit drink group) @ 5 min and comes to normal level after 30 min. I agree with your and those scientist knowledge if there is significant difference between both groups, then it is bileved that soft drink consumption does have immediat bad effect on salivary galnd. Thats is normal physiological process my dear.Salivary pH decline partially if you take any food stuff. Please read Human physiology (Guyton). And my sincere request is dont pick anything from google and wikipedia. Both are banned from scientifc community and researcher. Googled knowledge is e-knowledge(Evoporating knowledge)

Recently I got DRY COUGH. When it starts it goes non stop for 10-15 minutes. I had tough time during night sleep. Due to severe and non stop cough, i started getting pains in my stomach. It was very horrible & terrible cough.

I did all medicine, visited all doctors, took all cough syrups suggested by my friends, family friends etc. But no luck. Cough did not stop. I spent around 3 thousand Rs for medicine. It continued for about 45 days.

August 14th I came to home. I was there in home only for 4 days. During these 4 days my mother daily gave me a bowl of boiled and crushed PACHCHESARU in the morning, a glass of RAAGI milk in night and two tender coconuts daily one in morning and one in evening. Except these, I stopped taking all other medicines and syrups. My mother told me to continue having two tender coconuts without fail even after going to Bangalore.

I came back to Bangalore on August 18th. As per my mother's order I daily had two tender coconuts for 15 days and my KEMMU is MANGA MAAYA :-). Thank God...!

God has given medicine for all problems through nature. We are not realizing it. People are spoiling their health by addicting to soft drinks. I think lately people are realizing it as I can see a tender coconut stall every 1 KM distance in Bangalore. Previously it was not so.

Hope my cough experience and its remedy will help someone through this forum. If so, I will be happy :-)

11th five year plan was between 2007-2012. Now 12th is running (2012-2017). This project was started 7 years back and completed now. If UPA did not have to spend time on 2g, 3g, coalgate, adarsh, herald, chopper, cwg, power scams, this could have been completed by at least 2009. BTW, it is not airport, marine, NH or Railway projects to take such a long time.

We are happy with the last 3 months progress on this project and that is why it is reality today.

This project was uted by a Bangalore based Kewaunee Labway India Pvt Ltd. My friend works here as Mechanical Engineer. He had told me about this project today.
