Udupi, Sep 23: The citizens in Udupi witnessed a wondrous phenomenon on Tuesday September 23. The sun shone in all its glory, surrounded by a colouful circle of light.
The ring, or disk, called a halo, is an optical phenomenon produced by water particles in the clouds.
The ring is caused by sunlight passing through water particles in cirrus clouds within the Earth's atmosphere. The particles bend direct sunlight at a certain angle, thus forming a halo around the sun.
The halo phenomenon is not limited any particular season and can happen anytime and anywhere, depending on the viewer's vantage point and the sun's position. It is most often sighted during autumn or winter.
The halo can often be sign of rain within the next 24 hours.
As the halo formed an aura around the sun, curios citizens came out of their houses to witness the phenomemon.
