Beltangady, Sep 19: In a tragic incident, a fight between two brothers ended in the death of one and serious injury to another, at Peelya village here.
The deceased has been identifed as Shekar (40). His brother Krishnappa (45) who was seriously injured is battling for his life in a hospital in Mangalore.
It is said that the reason for the fight between the brothers was a quarrel between the two wives of the younger brother.
Shekar, a driver by profession was in Mumbai for many years. He came back to his village two years ago to settle down. In addition to being a driver he was also involved in farming. Shekar was said to have married twice and both wives were living with him along with four children.
Sources said that there was used to be constant quarrels between Shekar’s elder wife Bela and younger wife Pramila. On Wednsday night, a fight erupted against, and when there was no end to it, both of them left the house separately. When Shekar arrived after his work he did not find anybody at home. After talking to a few people Shekar came to his own conclusion that his elder brother Krishnappa was responsible for the fight and he was conniving with one of his wives to lodge a police complaint against him.
Shekar then reportedly went to Krishnappa’s house at around 3 am with a machete. As Krishnappa was renovating his house, he did not have the front door to his house, which made Shekar’s entry easier. Krishnappa too took out his machete which was kept under his bed. It is said that he had kept it knowing Shekar would attack him anytime. In the fight that ensued, both were seriously hurt and were taken to a hospital. Subsequently Shekar succumbed to injuries.
Further investigations have revealed that Shekar was involved in petty criminal activities including theft of petrol in Mumbai when he lived there. He has been nurturing hatred towards his elder brother for a long time, neighbours said. Knowing fully well his brother's criminal past and hot-headed nature, Krishnappa used to keep a sword always handy even when sleeping, it is learnt.
On Thursday he was told that his Mumbaibased wife had gone to file police complaint against him relating to his second marriage without her consent. Although he waited for their return, both his wives did not come home on Thursday too.
A case was registered in Venoor police station. It is said that Shekhar had married a girl in Mumbai before marrying a Tamilian named Bela for the second time. He married Prameela from Bajagoli, who happened to be his third marriage, after shifting base here. He has three daughters from his second wife, and two sons from the first. Prameela has a threeyearold daughter, it is learnt. The first wife does not live with him.
It is gathered that the two wives fought on the trivial issue of pencil belonging to the children.
Prameela, it is learnt, has taken her daughter as well as three daughters of Shekhar's other wife, Bela, to her parental home in Bajagoli.
