Yettinahole project: CM tries to allay fears, urges DK ministers to convince people

Daijiworld Media Network – Bangalore (SP)

Bangalore, Sep 19: Addressing a meeting of people's representatives hailing from coastal Karnataka, Karnataka chief minister, Siddaramaiah, tried to clear the misgivings they apparently had relating to Yettinahole project.

In the consultative meeting attended among others by former union minister Oscar Fernandes, ministers Ramanath Rai, Vinay Kumar Sorake, U T Khadar, M B Patil, and T B Jayachandra, legislators Mohiuddin Bawa, Vasant Bangera, J R Lobo, Ivan D'Souza, Ganesh Karnik and Pratapchandra Shetty as well as principal secretary in water resources department Kapil Mohan, and chief minister's secretary Srinivas, the CM presented an exhaustive picture of the project to make it clear that the project envisages use of excess rain water for augmentation of tanks in Kolar and Chikkaballapur districts.

"Yettinahole project is not a river diversion project. As such, there is no need for the people, environmentalists and activists to get unduly perturbed by it. Netravati river diversion project is quite a different concept than Yettinahole project, which only proposes to use about 24 tmc of rain water between June and October to fill tanks in the above two districts. The purpose of the project is to rejuvenate these tanks towards meeting requirement of these drinking water-starved districts," he explained.

He called upon the people's representatives to convince the environment and anti-project activists about the genuine aim of the project. "They need to be educated about the fact that this is not a river diversion project. If there is a need, let them be invited to the city to get a complete and comprehensive picture of the entire project with every individual detail," he instructed officials of water resources department.

The officials presented details of the project along with a map showing how water is pooled, diverted and collected, duly providing details of how much rain water goes waste by just flowing into the sea during rainy season.

I think sharing water during rainy season only should be allowed as it will not affect DK much.
But it should be guaranteed the lifting of water only during those stipulated months and not beyond that.
After all the plan is to store water in Tanks which otherwise remain dry.
If such water available to those arid areas high in the plateau, farmlands will flourish and the prices of veg\rice\pulses will come down benefiting all. Thirst of those people will be quenched too....
I do not think anyone can stop development projects by the Indian Govt and State Govt., If work on this project is delayed due to various hindrances, the cost of the project will escalate there by affecting many other projects due to shortage of funds.
When decided the project should go on without any stoppage of work.

It starts with "ONLY 24 TMC OF WATER FROM JUNE TO OCTOBER". As the water shortage arises, the demand for more water is quite obvious. Out politicians are also giving step mother treatment to DK. If this project takes off, DK digs its own grave for sure.

You are right sir, now they are 'requesting' the water, later they will start 'demanding'. And if we have shortage of water in future and if we cannot accommodate to give water to others they will go to court just like TN is doing now for Kaveri water.
We cannot do anything when these politicians are hell bent on proceeding with the project, mainly because of the amount of money involved in the project. when the project is complete after some 25 years or so, the state government will have spent over a thousand crores on the project, half of which will be in these guys pockets. And which will leave western ghats scarred forever.

when i was adult i was thinking so much rain water gets waste just letting it to go to sea.
how nice it is if human brain does some plan to store and pump this water to people in other parts of state where there is always drought. so that these people use this water for agriculture and drinking.

i will say always yes to this project.

This is the right step from CM to explain about the project to people and transparency of the project.Instead of wasting the water the needy people of the state can use. Good move and also waiting for the day Mr. Vajpayes dream to inter connect all the rivers in India to solve the water problem.

I think it is high time you came into the picture, take over from the "drunkard" Siddu and set right everything that you think is wrong.
You have great vision and experience and knowledge of all the projects the Government is handling wrongly.
Step in please..and show how it is done. That should put the CM who you hate so much, to utter shame.
    We are all with you...

DK people are not aware of pain of people in other districts who do not have access to water sources.I have seen people do bore well upto 2000 feet in Kolar district and many end up with dry bore wells. As it mentioned by the CM it is not going to affect people of DK if the rainwater is lifted back to other districts.
They also pay taxes to the government and they are equally entitled to enjoy the nature.
