Mangalore, Sep 25: Is Panambur beach turning into a death trap? Nobody can give a sure answer to this.  But the statistics about the drown cases that have taken place at the beach in the last few months do prove a point.  However, in most of the cases it is very true that tragedies have occurred owing to the negligence of the tourists or people who come for a stroll.

It was only a week ago that a tourist from Bangalore had drowned at the beach.  Now within a week, one more tourist who had come from Mysore is reported to have drowned at the beach on Sunday September 24 evening.

A group of 11 tourists from Mysore had come to the Panambur beach after visiting the Shri Kshetra Manjunatha at Dharmasthala on Sunday evening.  Just like any other visitor from the up-country regions who get excited at the scenic beauty of beaches and cannot but plunge into the sea despite not knowing or not being experts in swimming, these tourists too ventured into the sea. 

Though the people and the security personnel who were on the spot warned them against crossing the limit, a few of them went ahead.  Among them, one Ashok (22) was washed away by mighty waves.  Though the police and locals tried to rescue him, they did not succeed.  However, one more person, who too was in danger of being washed away, was rescued.

The administration has erected a board on the beach wherein the names of the persons who have drowned on the beach are mentioned for the benefit of new-comers.  But the tourists fail in understanding that if they neglect the warning, their names too would be added in the same board one day.
