    Hillary D'Silva,
It's wrong to think passport is as your proof of identity, though it is but in many countries there is national identity card which is use as primary identity card as well as drivers license. You need a passport to travel abroad, whether for holidays, work or to live, and will become a proof of identity as well in the international stage. It does not mean when you have a passport, you have to You have to ABROAD and SETTLE but also you can go abroad for eduction, medical treatments, to participate in sports activities either as a sportsman/sportswomen or as just a fan, holidays, visiting friends and relatives. There are so many reasons why people go abroad and to go abroad for whatever reason you do need a passport. Hope it clears your doubt about passport.
