Updated

Mangalore, Sep 10: Hours after Daijiworld exposed the prostitution racket being run from a house-turned-lodge at Pandeshwar here, the city crime branch (CCB) police Valentine D'Souza and the Pandeshwar police raided the spot separately and took three persons for questioning.

However, it turned out that as soon as the report had gone online, the pimps and girls at the prostitution hub had vacated the place, and when the raids took place, the police found the rooms empty.

Nevertheless, the Pandeshwar police took Venkatesh and Raghav who were cleaning the lodge for questioning, while the CCB police detained the manager of the lodge Shivashankar.

When questioned by the police, Shivashankar said that visitors come to the lodge just to take bath and refresh.

Pandeshwar police also said that they sealed the lodge after conducting the raid.

Speaking to daijiworld, the Pandeshwar police said that further action will be decided upon after interrogating Venkatesh and Raghav.

CCB inspector Valentine D'Souza said that Shivashankar would be interrogated and a report would be submitted to the DCP (crime), after which further action would be taken.

There is no information presently on the whereabouts of the lodge owner and the pimps.

Daijiworld Media Network - Mangalore

Mangalore, Sep 10: A sting operation by Daijiworld team has unravelled a shocking prostitution racket being run blatantly from morning hours until late night in a house at Pandeshwar here. What's more, the police seem to have turned a blind eye to the racket.

On information from highly placed sources, ironically from the police department itself, when Daijiworld team reached the place - 'Karuna', a house-turned-lodge - was found to be running a flesh trade without any fear. A close observation of the place revealed that the house was bustling with prostitution.

Karuna lodge is located near Old Kent Road, in a dark corner by the side of the railway track, about 200 meters away from the fire service station. The lodge functions round the clock, guarded by many muscular men who work in shifts.

It was found that there are as many as 12-20 girls living in the place allegedly offering sexual pleasure to customers looking for sex. The batch of girls changes every three weeks, which suggests that the house could be linked to a larger racket operating outside Mangalore and the state.

From information gathered on the style of operation from one of the regular customers, it was learnt that the inflow of females from Mumbai and Nepal is more, while from states like Karunataka, Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh and Kerala it is relatively less. "Girls demand a minimum of Rs 300 for one-time sexual intercourse and more for extended time," said a customer on the condition of anonymity.

He further added that girls were forced to demand less money on stern instructions from pimps (middle men in flesh trade). The pimps in the house demand not less than Rs 500 for one-time physical intimacy, Rs 1,500 for an hour and Rs 3,000 for a day-long stay at the lodge with a girl.

"The center conducts the business from 6 am to 12 am and a single female may sleep with maximum of 20 men a day," he said, adding that around 200-250 customers like him come there on a daily basis to seek pleasure.

A large chunk of prostitutes fall in the age group of 25-35, as customers demand young blood. Poverty-ridden females become easy prey for the prostitution racket and enter the business haplessly to make a living.

One of the pimps said the lodge would be closed if there was any indication of a police raid. The place otherwise runs the flesh trade for almost 19 hours a day. The girls brought from various places stay for three weeks until another batch of girls arrives. "There is no fixed set of girls to sell sex," he said.

Though there are residential apartments and a school close by, it does not seem to have deterred the owner of the lodge from carrying out the alleged trade. The apathy by the police department, according sources, has eased the way for the racket to relentlessly sale female flesh.

Without Police support it is not possible to run such activities and that is why nobody was caught(Obviously Tipped Off) and place found empty except a few innocents -

Lets put in this way. Stop all prostitution. Stop all Sin. Now tell me, how to stop rapes, molestation of girls ?. Isn't rape god forbidden? Lot of people going there means, lot of people knows about it including police. Those activities may happening since so many years as the pictures tells the story. There are Lot of hungry people in the society including educated public. When they hungry, they will not see what is the outcome. This is a sensitive issue and need to tackle wisely. If the prostitution should be legalized, it should be properly monitored like developed country. Nothing should go against will of females who involved in prostitution. There should not be STD's, HIV etc. Solution is not so easy as we talk. But nothing impossible.

In Times of India, it was reported that women who some how escaped from these diseases, live a miserable life later, when the charm on the face fades. It is said this type of women, you might find on street corners, under the bridges and shanty areas. They say their market value comes down to such a level that they are compelled to sleep with anybody for a meal or a cup of tea. Sisters, please do not burn the flower of your youth by this God forbidden act.

The entire episode proves one of the two things – either the police are hand-in-glove with the racket or the police are fools. If they were serious about stopping prostitution at the spot they would have laid a trap and caught the culprits red handed. What is the point in apprehending the lodge manager and the sweepers? As long as we have this kind of police, who prefer to behave like fools, crimes of all kinds will continue. Sad.

I respect your feeling for these women. But, you may have heard a saying "Andige ade sukha, Indige ede sukha" means then that was happiness and now this is happiness. Mumbai police had tried to rehabilitate these women, but failed. They are accustomed to Hi-Fi living, they could not eat dal baat in the center and demanded biryani and some wine to digest the biryani. It is a complicated case and also, you can make out how many will come out and ask for help.

Those people arguing to legalize prostitution due to the explosion of prostitution is like telling, "more murders are taking place, so make the guns freely available to everybody instead of using knife".

The only State in the U.S. where prostitution legalized is the State of Nevada. Due to the recession, the economically worst hit State in the U.S. is Nevada.

Promoting the fun of darkness through legalizing it is a very dangerous game plan!

Many U.S. cities where gambling was promoted, they are now faced with serious economic crisis. The Atlantic city in NJ, five of the gambling hotels are closed, over 6000 people lost the jobs and the creditors are going to loose in between $ 100-500 million dollars.

Prostitution racket is not so simple as many may think!

Many women/Girls are there not on their own will.
They are fooled and forced into prostitution, either sold, kidnapped or drugged.
Because Brothel keepers high hand with some bad elements in law enforcement agency, these females are not able to come out.
Those ventured out are severely punished, and some tried to expose are killed even.
Sad part is that People from our region also are very much involved in the racket.

Whenever police wants to go on vacation, they get a car with driver for the whole period. The income of police is such that to get a transfer to Bhandup police station, the higher ups are to be bribed. Like this Mumbai might be having hundreds of dens. This is the bread and butter of police. Same police told me that the salary he gets is not even sufficient for his breakfast.

Why this article should pin point lack of police action?
It is very well known these type of activity can go on only with the blessings of police department. They seem to get quite a lot both ways out of it. Occasional raid with prior info to the owners, does not amount to much which amounts to "you scratch my back, I scratch yours"
For that matter there are so many criminal activities that are taking place with their knowledge.
Undercover police agent turns himself as double agent.
Once in a blue moon they may catch some innocent guy and charge him. Poor guy(s) they may rot there in jail for no fault of theirs.

Unless there is accountability and strict action\severe punishment to these policemen involved in such under hand activities, no where there can be law and order.

In a city like Mangalore which is bustling, one can expect the prostitution trade to grow at an alarming rate. One of the reasons is the male-immigrants that are flocking into the city and the girls who look for easy money choose to cater the needs of these people and earn quick bucks. In the beginning some of them might have chosen to jump into this trade to meet their financial demands. However, once they get the taste of this easy money, which is not easily replaceable with other profession, it is difficult to come out of it.

We have heard recently how film-actresses are involved in the flesh-trade who must be charging millions of Rupees for their “service”. If celebrities who earn in millions for acting and modeling can do this thing, how about a common person, who is in need of money.

It is shocking that despite this red-light place operated right under the nose of our police station, they are doing a flourishing business. One can imagine how much protection money the police are getting.

I am shocked and disgusted by comments of many to legalize prostitution.
Legalizing prostitution is not the solution to reduce rapes !!! Mumbai has a red light area but has it reduced rapes ?
Rapes can be prevented if we have a strong police force and if the accused are given a harsh punishment. But our law is so weak that once can either bribe the cops or use a lawyer to drag the case for years together and set free due to lack of evidence...
Rapes in Saudi Arabia are unheard of as they behead the rapist if proven guilty. If same is done in India, only then rapes of women and children can minimize.
Only God can save India, the way women and little children are getting raped.

Mumbai has a huge red light area called Kamatipura. Mangalore is a growing cosmopolitan city. They should stop prostitution which is the oldest profession in the world. Mangalore also needs a red light area like any other city in the world. There is no city in the world without a prostitution den.
In one way prostitution could significantly reduce the incidence of rape.

Legalize prostitution and like any other jobs they should be give all the workers right including over time pay, medical insurance, gratuity and pension etc. as they are doing one of the toughest jobs and keeping the city safe of sexual predators!!Please protect them they are the real guardians not the police!! No wonder police is turning a blind eyes as they are making the life of police easier!!As long as they are no force used I guess any person has the right to use their own body to make a hard earned living !!

    Pooja,

I'm sorry if I have made you feel bad with my comments, I am also a selfish person who is thinking for the well being of so many girls that would have been raped, if such arrangement was absent, be it selfishness on my part, but I see a bitter positive ness in it, though I want it or not.

Imagine if man could fulfill his desires only if he got married and not otherwise, what would have happened to those that are unfit for marriage, there would not even be a single girl that could have saved from the hands of such people.

This prostitution was run by some one in the living on the fringe of the society. What about the racket being run in the heart of the city by a well known businessman / politician/ hotelier.Nobody talks about or dares to do any thing.Once a week booze for girls is free, is to be borne by males who come there and later everything else .

Is it a new phenomenon in Mangalore? No. There may be so many other well organized secret/well protected places where such activities are conducted.
Best way is to legalize brothels/prostitution like in Mumbai or any other cosmopolitan cities. This can help in checking rape or sexual harassment in the society from sex hungry maniacs.

There should make Prostitution legal so high hushna(Heat) people can go and reduce it, This will help to reduce rape cases.
In countries where everything is legal like Holland, Swiss and Norway crime rate is very low.

Flesh trade is a business which does not require investment. And by the way, history speaks flesh trade or you call it prostitution has been there ever since the world came to existence.

Appreciate DW's efforts to unfold the anti-social activities taking place right in the city. Hope police will act now.

Prostitution by force is not agreed by me at all,it is definitely a crime, but when they do it with their own will then is should be legalized as men who cannot have control on themselves can satiate their desires with them and thereby minimizing rapes.

No girl likes to be a prostitute by choice, it is always by force - she is forced either by circumstances or by people in the flesh trade. Some think girls do it for money even if they are well to do, but no girl would want 20 different men a day to exploit her if she can avoid it.

    Now some points O.K.
1.A close observation of the place revealed that the house was bustling with prostitution.
    How 'close' was the observation?
    'Bustling' means how-here?
2.What's more, the police seem to have turned a blind eye to the 'bleak' racket.
'Bleak' here is first cousin of 'Leak'??
3."Girls demand a minimum of Rs 300 for one-time sexual intercourse and more for extended time," said a customer "on the condition of anonymity".
"ON CONDITION OF ANNONYMITY" Has he won many 'laurels for the country??
4.A large chunk of prostitutes fall in the age group of 25-35, as customers demand young blood".
Good statistics regarding overtime, working in shifts and all that to go with the demand for 'Young Blood'...Vampires for sure with taste!!
5."There is no fixed set of girls to sell sex," he said.
    Is it there anywhere??.
Apart from all these observations, Shreyas and Kunal , you have done a good job. Think this racket is prevalent in Mangalore since a very long time.
It is the police administration's 'blind eye' that has allowed it to thrive...nothing else.
Good expose and in the real sense of the term!!
