Mangalore, Sep 8: Policemen from Pandeshwar station in the city arrested two persons who allegedly were involved with chain snatching, as well as stealing of vehicles and valuables, on Sunday September 7. Items valued at Rs 1.12 lac including a motor bike and gold ornaments were seized from their possession. The duo was arrested from Shivanagar in Pandeshwar here. The policemen had visited the spot after being tipped about two persons on a Yamaha motor bike moving around the area in suspicious manner.
The arrested persons have been identified as Muneer (21) from Kalloni in Bajpe Shantigudde, and Sairaj (20) from Angaragundi near Bykampady. Two Mangalya neck chains, copies of documents pertaining to certain vehicles, and the motor bike reportedly used by them for thefts, were taken into possession from their possession.
The policemen, immediately after sighting the motor bike, blocked movement of the thieves by placing the jeep across the road. When asked to produce vehicle records, they produced xerox copies of the documents, which did not match with the vehicle they were riding. They were arrested on suspicion, and their escapades came to light during sustained interrogation, the police personnel said.
So far, the two arrested persons reportedly have confessed to the theft of a motor bike from the BCM hostel compound in Kairangala, snatching of two chains from the necks of women participating in the Mosaru Kudige festival on August 18 at Katipalla Suratkal, and cash and utensils from the house located near Infosys Technologies Ltd at Konaje here on August 7.
The modus operandi adopted by the thieves for snatching of chains from the necks of lone women was to approach the women in the guise of stranger seeking to know some fake address, and snatching away the chain when the attention of the women is elsewhere. The chain snatcher will then run away and ride on the pillion of the motor bike that is waiting for him some distance away.
The policemen are checking the veracity of these statements and looking into the possibility of the two having been involved with more such thefts.
