Mumbai, Sep 6 (PTI): Gangster Abu Salem has moved the Supreme Court of Portugal seeking a direction to the Indian government to follow its order cancelling his extradition.
In January 2012, Portugal's Supreme Court had upheld a lower court order cancelling Salem's extradition from that country, on the ground that Indian investigators violated the deportation rules by slapping charges attracting death penalty on him.
"We have filed a petition in the Portugal's Supreme Court seeking directions to Indian government to execute the court's order (and bring him back to Portugal)," Salem's lawyer Sabha Qureshi told PTI.
She said they have submitted to the Supreme Court of Portugal the list of cases where offences contravening the extradition treaty have been pressed by Indian authorities.
The petition will come up for hearing in due course of time, she said.
Salem, an accused in the 1993 Mumbai serial blasts case, was extradited from Portugal on November 11, 2005, after a prolonged legal battle.
