Mangalore, Aug 30: Kavita Trust which works for the promotion of Konkani poetry has announced annual Konkani poetry competitions for children and youth. All the schools, colleges, institutions in and around Dakshina Kannada, Udupi, Kerala, Margao and Panaji have been sent information in this regard along with the rules and regulations. The organisers have requested children and the youth to take part in these competitions in large numbers.
The competitions are as follows:
1. Charles and Theresa Rodrigues Memorial VIII All India Konkani Poetry Writing Competition

Students from 6th to 10th class can participate in this competition. Poem should be in Konkani language written in any one of the 3 scripts, that is, Roman, Kannada, Nagari and must be original.
Poem must contain minimum 16 lines and there should be atleast 50 words in it. Poems must be sent along with an application form (format has been already sent / can be requested for) duly filled in on or before November 15. All participants will get certificates and winners will get cash prizes of Rs 2000, Rs 1000 and Rs 750 respectively along with a memento.
2. Cha Fra DeCosta Memorial First Konkani Poetry Reciting Competition for children below 15 years

This competition has been sponsored by Nelson Rodricks and family, Dubai in the name of the late poet C F D'Costa, who was the Sahitya Akademi awardee for his book ‘Sonsyache Kaan’ in 1989.

Children from Karnataka only can take part in this competition.
3. Rohan and Lavita Monteiro IV All India Konkani Poetry Reciting Competition for youth between the age group of 15 and 30

Youth from any place in India or abroad, can take part in this competition.
Both the poetry reciting competitions will be held in two rounds. The preliminary rounds will be held as follows:
• Mangalore (Don Bosco Hall on September 7, in association with Konkani Natak Sabha)
• Bantwal (Modankap Church Hall on September 12, in association with ICYM, Modankap)
• Udupi (Udupi church Hall on September 21, in association with 'Uzwad' Monthly Konkani magazine)
• Karkala (Christ the King Church Hall on September 28, in association with 'Uzwad' Monthly Konkani magazine)
(Both competitions for children and youth will be held together in the above venues)
• Panaji (T B Cunha Hall on September 11, in association with Konkani Bhasha Mandal, Goa)
• Margao (KBM Hall on September 12, in association with Konkani Bhasha Mandal, Goa)
(Poetry reciting competition for youth only will be held in the above venues)
These competitions will start at 10 am in the morning. The poem recited must be in Konkani. All the participants in the children and youth category will get the certificates. In all the above venues minimum of 3 and maximum of 5 will be selected for the finals, which will be held on January 11, 2015 at Chowlikere, Barkur on the occasion of the 9th edition of Kavita Fest.
All the finalists will be given travelling allowance, certificates and Rs 300. The organizers will take care of their accommodation and food arrangements for a maximum of two days.
The winners will receive cash prizes, certificates and mementos. There will be consolation prizes as well.
Those who would like to participate in these poetry reciting competitions can come to any one of the venues directly half hour in advance along with the poem and register their names. Poem need not be their own and could be selected from any of the Konkani poetry books available or from the websites. But the organizers expect the participants to memorize the poem and recite it by-heart.
