New Delhi, Aug 26 (Agencies): New governors were Tuesday named in Rajasthan, Karnataka, Maharashtra and Goa.
Vajubhai Rudabhai Vala has been appointed governor of Karnataka.
A Rashtrapati Bhavan communique said the new governors are Kalyan Singh (Rajasthan), Vajubhai Rudabhai Vala (Karnataka), C. Vidyasagar Rao (Maharashtra) and Mridula Sinha (Goa).
The post of the governor of Karnataka has remained vacant since July after H R Bhardwaj completed his five year term. Tamil Nadu governor K Rosaiah was given the additional charge of Karnataka.
Born in 1938, Vajubhai has held several ministerial portfolios in successive governments and at one time was a contender for the post of Gujarat chief minister.
A senior leader of the Patel community, Vajubhai represented Rajkot West constituency of Gujarat as MLA, and was the finance minister of the state for two terms. He is also the current speaker of Gujarat Assembly. He served as mayor of Rajkot before getting elected as MLA.
Vajubhai is considered close to Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
The 76-year-old is a veteran Bharatiya Janata Party activist who started his political career with the erstwhile Jana Sangh.
