Mangalore, Aug 24: Free career guidance programme 'What Next After 10th Standard', hosted by Daijiworld, saw hundreds of students from all over gather at SDM Law College here on Sunday August 24.
Students seeking guidance on making life-changing career decisions enthusiastically participated in the workshop along with parents.
Inaugurating the workshop, former minister and educationist Krishna J Palemar said that transformation in the family system from joint to nuclear has meant lack of guidance for children from elders. "This work, however, is now done by career guidance workshops that facilitate the process of moulding children in the right way and helping them head towards their goals," he added.
"Students after 10th standard go through confusion on what to choose next. Career guidance workshops show the top current trends in the education system and help the students get a clear picture on the scope in various fields and choose what's best for them," he said.
He reiterated that the joint families in bygone days provided comprehensive suggestions on moving forward in life.
"Today, after the emergence of nuclear family, the number of members in the family have reduced to three or four and parents are mostly seen busy in earning which is imperative in this competitive age," he said.
He expressed that due to the frenzied job-oriented lifestyle of parents, children were left alone, unable to understand the complexity of career paths.
He also conveyed that the contemporary age required such workshops to alleviate the confusions emerging within the minds of the students are at crossroads after 10th standard.
Chief guest Shivkumar, chartered accountant, briefly explained that the highest stake was in banking sector which would contribute to employment in the next five years. Due to the exit of human resource (retirement), five lac vacancies would be created over the next five years and students could avail this opportunity by taking up commerce as a priority after 10th standard.
"The agricultural sector in India has been slowly taken over by the industry and commerce sectors and it is evident in the contribution of these sectors to the country's GDP (gross domestic product)," he added.
He advised the children to look for options in the field of commerce and industry.
Editor-in-chief of Daijiworld Walter Nandalike praised the initiative taken by Ananth Prabhu, assistant professor of computer science department, Sahyadri College of Engineering, for inspiring Daijiworld to host the event.
He said that the today the situation is such that one looks only at profit-making commercial extravaganzas and sponsors rarely come forward to invest money on educational programmes.
He thanked Palemar for taking interest to sponsor the career guidance workshop and hoped that the workshop would help the gathering.
The day-long workshop was conducted by Ananth Prabhu who informed the students on various career options in the current competitive world. Ananth Prabhu is also the host of the career guidance programme on Daijiworld 24x7 TV channel, telecast every Sunday at 9 am.
