Mangalore, Aug 24: Kadri police have filed case against 6 persons, who are yet to be identified, for celebrating the death of Kannada writer, Jnanapith awardee U R Ananthamurthy by bursting crackers.
Police have registered suo motu case against such miscreants who were seen in a group at around 7.45 pm, soon after news of Ananthamurthy's death was flashed in the media. The police who were patrolling reached the spot, but the unidentified miscreants fled the scene.
The police filed a case under sections 143, 147, 290 (r/w 149) on charges of illegally gathering in a group, and bursting crackers in the middle of road, thereby causing trouble to pedestrians as well as to commuters.
Meanwhile, in Mudigere, police arrested at least 5 persons for celebrating the death of the Kannada author. The arrested have been identified as Hindu Jagarana Vedike taluk president Hullemane Chandru, Banakal BJP secretary Hallibail Girish, Bajrang Dal activist Kannehalli Bharath, Yuva Morcha president Praveen Poojary, Bijuvallu Bharath and others. It is learnt that all the accused have been granted bail after being booked under sections 143, 144, 149 and 290.
U T Khadar apologies: Speaking to the media on Saturday, state health minister U T Khadar apologised to the public for the act of the miscreants who hurt the sentiments of the people of coastal region.
"The act by a few people who celebrated the death U R Ananthmurthy has pained me individually as well as our government. I apologise for their act. Such miscreants are a burden not only to their parents, but also to society."
