Mangalore, Aug 23: A premature baby that was taken for burial after being proclaimed dead by doctors was found to be alive just as the parents poured milk into the baby's mouth as per Hindu tradition. The overjoyed parents immediately took the baby back to the hospital. The incident took place on Saturday, August 23.

Gauri from Kumta had a premature delivery on August 15 at one of the private hospitals in Kuthar and the baby was kept in the incubator. The doctors at the hospital declared the baby 'dead' on Saturday August 23 at 12 noon and informed the same to Pushparaj, the father of the child.

Pushparaj and his family members then took away the baby and proceeded to the burial ground at Chembu Gudde, Thokkottu to conduct the last rites.

During the last rites, in accordance with the Hindu tradition, Pushparaj poured milk into the mouth of the baby which was kept ready for burial. To their utter joy, they found that the baby was alive and crying. Pushparaj immediately rushed the baby to another hospital, where it is now recovering.

Pushparaj approached the Ullal police station to lodge a complaint against the private hospital. He is understood to have later decided not to hold the hospital responsible for the incident.

Meanwhile, the hospital in its clarification said that the baby had not been declared dead by the doctors and that the parents had themselves requested to discharge their baby from the hospital.

The hospital stated that the baby had failed to cry immediately after birth and had to be resuscitated and put on ventilator. Though the baby's condition improved initially, it started deteriorating afterwards and it was found that there was no spontaneous breathing. A neurosonogram was done which showed features of intraventricular haemorrhage and other symptoms, indicating poor prognosis (chances of recovery). The condition of the baby was explained to the parents, who were then not willing to continue treatment. Hence the baby was discharged on request, stated the hospital.

Please stop blaming each other. Neither Doctors are not equal to God nor the religious leaders. The life span which is given by God will be there at any cost and will end as per God’s plan.

I am not a Dr. But i am sure no Dr will do so at least in Mangalore. The Party has come on TV and news with statements , Hence i request the party to Produce the death Certificate given by Hospital. I guess even the media should try to check if the death certificate was issued to make the fact clear

    PD, Mangalore
Don't woryy truth will prevail. By the way all media is behind money. So no use of requesting to dumb media. Belief in God is sufficient to everyone. Keeping baby in incubator cost approx. 10 thousands bucks that could be the reason for parent decided to discharge.

A video and report which hides the real facts. Off course a biased report presented by the alleging side. I agree with PD, The family irrespective of any status are always given the full information of the condition being a general hospital and not a private nursing home but a university hospital with qualified super specialist in allopathic medicine and not duty doctors of BAMS or BHMS like in many nursing homes in Mangalore. Its very unfortunate incident with pre mediated idea the news has been spread. The family was given a full first hand report and child was taken back by them after informed consent was given and not at force .. they did go after all the formalities was complete. The infant was never d dead in the hospital. Its so unfortunate a gentle humble cultured extremely qualified Neonatologist (super Specialist) has been named in the Video report which is purely biased and short sighted with malicious intent. The medical fraternity stand by the institution with all force and back the institution which is providing yeoman service to the community of all classes color and creed.

This news is baseless . The baby was a premature one and was kept on ventilator for 7 days. The baby's parents wanted the premature baby to be weaned off the ventilator. The Doctors explained the consequences of doing so and tried to convince the parent to keep the baby on ventilator but the parent was adamant on getting the baby discharged, for reasons best known to him. Hence the baby was discharged against medical advice . The Doctors have clearly documented the same in the case sheet and the baby's parent has signed on it. No Doctors d the baby dead. If any person is d dead, as per rules, a medical certificate has to be issued by the Doctors. I ask the media and the people concerned, where is the death certificate issued by the Doctors??. The baby wasn't d dead and hence no death certificate was issued. It is not a case of medical negligence at all. The Doctors have done their duty, to the best of their ability. I request the media to kindly have a look at the evidence and confirm the facts before publishing something sensitive like this.I agree there are instances of Doctors being negligent, but this news is false. I am not here to defend any Doctor, but just wanted to enlighten people about what really happened. Satyameva Jayeta. The truth shall always pevail. Regards to all.

Please stop calling this as a ' MIRACLE '. Its gross injustice towards this little angel , God forbid if parents did not pour milk , the destiny would have been horrifying. These kind of negligence and irresponsibility increasing these , specially in small and nursing homes. The so called specialists just supervise , rest of things they leave it nurses and trainees. I HOPE WELL QUALIFIED WILL NOT MAKE SUCH MISTAKES. Prompt legal actions should be taken , name of hospital and people who handled this should be made public.

Shocking, shows the quality of docs coming out of 'self styled' universities who charge capitation fees in crores and churn out docs with high qualifications but skills equivalent to quacks!! No doubt read somewhere that public should first ascertain, irrespective of the chain of degrees, how the doc gained admission either through capitation or merit if it is through capitation just avoid!!

I dont thnk doctor will do a deliberate mistake of declaring the baby as dead..for sure it might have died . God wanted to show to us that He is present n can do anything he wishes which cant be done by his creations..

No doctor would deliberately pronounce the death, unless he ensured the parameters of all vital organs are dead.

This is almighty God's miracle and the parents should rejoice the occasion. Also, do take care of this invaluable gift from Him.
