Karkala, Aug 2: The incessant rains in the taluk over the past three days have claimed the life of a two-year-old boy at Banglegudde here.
Saibhuvan (2), son of Sanjay and Shruti, died after the wall of their house collapsed on Saturday August 2.
The family was asleep in the bedroom, when all of a sudden, in the wee hours of Saturday, the wall of the room collapsed due to heavy rain.
Sanjay at once shifted his injured son to the outer part of the house, and came back to rescue his wife who was trapped under the debris.
The two-year-old who sustained severe injuries on his head was rushed to hospital, but he breathed his last on the way. Saibhuvan was the only child of his parents.
Sanjay, who hails from Belvai, married Shruti, daughter of Krishnnappa from Balehonnur, four years ago. After marriage, the couple stayed at a house in Banglegudde. Sanjay works as a lorry driver for local timber businessman Surendra Nayak. The house where Sanjay and his family stayed was provided by his employer, sources said.
The locals joined hands to help the bereaved couple. They put up a temporary supporting structure for the house to prevent further damage.
District incharge minister Vinay Kumar Sorake, MLA Sunil Kumar, former MLA Gopal Bhandary, deputy commissioner Muddumohan, Kundapur assistant commissioner Yogeshwar, tahsildar Raghavendra and others visited the spot. Sorake handed over a cheque of Rs 1.5 lac to the couple as ex-gratia. Town council chief executive officer Rayappa gave a sum of Rs 5,000.
