Mangalore, Aug 2: The officials of Mangalore city corporation (MCC) on Saturday July 2 demolished a structure belonging to Sarvajaanika Ganeshotava Samiti at Markada near Kavoor here, following complaints that it was constructed on government land.

Sources said that the building was constructed on 150 mt of government land reserved for road. On July 30, in the MCC council meet, corporator of Kunjathbail Mohammed had raised this issue and demanded that the building be demolished.

The structure was being used by the Ganeshotsava Samiti for dress rehearsals and other activities related to their programmes.

Speaking to daijiworld, Sunil, joint director of Sarvajanika Ganeshotsava Samiti alleged that political influence had driven the MCC to take this step. "There are so many hotels, bars and shops in this area that are illegally built on government land, but MCC has not take action despite complaints.

"Markada corporator Harinath had assured that our building would not be demolished, but within three days of the council meeting, the MCC has demolished it. This is a clear indication that there is influence by Mohammed," he said.

"Mohammed's relative had built a house on government land and and people of Markada had filed a complaint against him. But police have still not taken any action," he added.

A few people who were against the demolition gathered at the spot and protested. They said that they would meet the DC and demand demolition of other illegal buildings too. "If that is not done, then the administration will have to construct a new building for us," they said.

Basement should be reserved for parking. Here it is used for business purpose. Where is the administration?

    Dear Shankar,
Please stop spreading hatred, without been aware of the facts. Eidgha Maidan at Bavatagudde as per records had a very large area under Wakf property. All over India Wakf property is encroached upon. Thanks to the short sightedness of Muslim leaders, this will remain to be so.
To reiterate, EIdgha property exists on legal land, which presently is very much truncated. Kindly stop the dirty agenda of corrupting people’s minds by shooting false information without basis. I hope our Govt wakes up one day to enact laws against this prevailing evil. Jai Hind.

I strongly support Shri Sunil's (Jt. Director of Sarvajanika Ganeshathsava Samithi)argument that many of the Pucca structures built on Government land should also be demolished. Why MCC follows diferent rule for different people. However in India it is common that temporary Pandals are built on Government Land to celebrate Onam, Ganesh Pooja, Durga Pooja, Krishna Astami etc, etc. The organizers of these Festival committee should refrain from building permanent structures on Government Land. Is it the same Corporator who didn't allow the M.C.C Officials to widen the Concrete Road adjacent to his House compound ???? If so this rivalry between them got a History!!!!!!

@ vasanth - why are you crying foul despite knowing that this land was illegally occupied?

Didn't Modi in 2007-08 demolish unauthorized temples in Gujarat, which were illegally built or coming in the way of development?

Please check on google or news archive for these facts.

Why were all 'Pseudo Religious groups' and People silent back then??

Supreme Court once issued an order to demolish all the structures which hinders roadways across country.I guess that directives valid till now.Any structure which belongs to road margin should be demolished. Now a days you can see so many structures,Kattes, poles with flags which not only obstruct vehicle movement but also makes center of clashes.
