Techie who went missing during trekking traced near Sakleshpur

Sakleshpur, Jul 29 (The Hindu) : A Chennai-based techie, who went missing during a trekking expedition in the Western Ghats near Sakleshpur on Saturday, was traced on Tuesday afternoon.

Srikant Balaji (24), who works for Infosys in Chennai, wandered in the forests for three days before reaching Kabbinahalli, near Hassan–Mangalore highway.

Balaji was part of a 14-member team which went on a four-day trekking expedition in the ghats organised by the Chennai Trekking Club.

He got separated from the team around 11.30 am on Saturday, a couple of hours after the trek started from the base camp at Aramane Gudda.

Balaji reached Kabbinahalli on Tuesday morning, where Santhosh, a resident of the village, offered him food and helped him contact his father over phone. By then, his father, Amaran, had reached Sakleshpur along with his relatives. After being informed, the Sakleshpur police rescued him.

“I missed my team because I stopped for a while to get rid of leeches that were on my feet. I shouted, but none could hear me because of the noise of a stream close by. By 2 p.m. on Saturday, I realised that I can’t reach my team members,” he told presspersons after reaching Sakleshpur.

Balaji’s cellphone with GPS facility was of no use as the battery died by Saturday evening. “I could not see around because of the thick fog... I was determined to return safe, though I kept losing hope often,” he said. He said he slept under trees and saw many wild animals.

“I decided to follow a stream on Sunday afternoon, in the hope that I could reach the highway. I finally reached the highway on Tuesday morning,” Balaji said.

As he got down from the police vehicle in Sakleshpur, Amaran hugged him, and both of them were in tears for a few minutes.

To a question, he said he did commit a mistake by entering the forest without seeking the permission of the Department of Forests and sought apologies.

Case booked

The department booked cases against all the 14 members of the team for entering the forest without permit.

S.S. Madhukeshwar, Assistant Commissioner of Sakleshpur subdivision, told presspersons that according to Section 24 of the Karnataka Forests Act, entering a reserve forest was an offence.

Another team of seven trekkers, all Bangaloreans, was detained by department officers on Tuesday afternoon and a case booked against them for trespassing forest areas, according to Madhukeshwar.

These techies are crazy they think they know everything in life. Software knowledge is sufficient to play around with nature.

Thank God he came out without any other injury and wild animals attack. In the first place we have to blame the organizers to start a tracking tour in monsoon without proper preparation ,and informing. How did they enter a reserve forest without written permission ?when they came to know that one Person is missing.?They should remain in contact throughout and specially in forest can many things happen.I just dont understand ,some People are against Techies saying they have mental imbalance.Techys can do and go anywhere just like any other normal ones.Thank God this fellow had Courage and slept there and thought to go his way.without mental stability he would have not succeeded.Respect.

I think to lose our way sometimes and carry such expedition is quite adventures. I am unable to understand why must authorities take any action on these people? They are young lads and we must promote these kind of expedition so that, the citizens are more aware about our nature. You are strong person Balaji.

Gender has got something to do with 'Climbing'...Right Rudolf? Add the S before 'He' here then -that's all! ...Usually men only climb right? Annie's then is an an exceptional case-Is it not?
Now blame it on Rolf (He- Your brother?)for misleading. He wrote Mr. Annie..Is it not?
That is why I was wondering- Why Annie got tired of climbing at 48?
Anna's never tire. is it not?

    Rolf Dear...
Read Annie's comment properly. Annie has started climbing very early. Nearing 50 he has exhausted himself. He just feels he might break his back if he tries climbing again. Your 50 above people must have started 'climbing' after 40 and different coconut tries. The 'krishi' or the 'gendaali' type. They are very short. You can climb and get down within no time. Annie's trees were long and he had to use oil , ropes and all that to climb before he could reach the nuts. In your trees and all nuts must be dangling very low...Got my point? So please do not belittle Annie's efforts. It has to do with confidence, this 'climbing' effort. That's all. Ask so many here in this forum...
    Yes or No?

Looks perplexing that the group just left this poor guy with the leeches behind without bothering to check out at regular intervals the safe presence of all the members of the group!!
Inexperienced trekkers going in the wild during rains is a very dangerous proposition unless accompanied by a couple of professional trekkers and a local who is well versed with the area!! In the absence of mobile signals it becomes very difficult to trace the victim easily!! It was divine providence who saved this guy with the vagaries of the monsoon and wild animals around!!

BTW, forest officers have done a "great job" of booking the innocent students, which is correct action as per the Forest Act but, how many organized gangs manage to plunder the forests of teak wood and other precious items in bulk with impunity and hardly any interceptions and seizing of such valuable items comes in the news??? Jai Hind!!

yes, very true. Trekking during Rainy season, while forest is covered with mist is very dangerous. and also one problem with these 'Organized' trek's are that, most of the trekkers will not know each other, so they don't realize that someone is missing unless they take a break and take a count.
That's why, while going on a dangerous trek, always should go with people we trust or even better with friends, who instead of just going on their daily business even though someone is missing, will actually stand and try to search us no matter what.

When I was a child I used to climb mango trees to pluck and eat the mangoes. I used to climb coconut trees to remove dried coconut and drink bondas. This I am talking when I was 8 to 15 years old.

If I climb today (now I am 48) definitely I have to break my back or die. What these young people have lost their brains after studying they get a job and after getting a job pocket is full and after the pocket is full feathers comes. Once the feather comes they try to fly !!!!!

Totally madness of trekking during monsoon. It is so slippery during rainy season. Why still people go? They go only to die!!

Even when the sea is so rough during rainy season people should avoid. Nobody knows what is nature's call. There also people go with their friends and families with the intention to enjoy (in other words to die). This is another madness.

    No regrets please.

This clearly shows the mental condition of our so called software techies. Real life is not so easy as sitting in front of PC and fooling innocent companies.
Such a big co like Infosys would have assessed the mental status of their employees and provided suitable entertainment instead of letting them into forest.

What mental status are you talking about? if he had a mental condition he would have never had the guts or intelligence to follow the stream and reach the highway.
And what are you talking about fooling innocent companies? do you think it is some dirty government organization where there is corruption everywhere?
And read the news properly, it was the part of their weekend hobby, company had no part in letting them into forest.
And anyways trekking is always better hobby than going to bar and getting p!$$ drunk.

A very good job done by forest officials of Karnataka state. It's the fault of organizers. Organizers should have provided him good mobile & enough training before entering such places.
