Beltangady: Objectionable pamphlets against priests - Locals protest

Daijiworld Media Network - Beltangady (SP)

Beltangady, Jul 28: Members of the Christian community at Mandantyar held a protest demonstration in front of Punjalakatte police station in the taluk on Sunday July 27. They were demanding for the arrest of those responsible for printing and distributing pamphlets containing contemptuous remarks against the priests of Madantyar church.

A few days back, a complaint had been filed by the parish council of Mandyar Sacred Heart Church in Punjalakatte police station, relating to spreading of malice against the priests of the church as well as the church by writing anonymous letters besides distributing pamphlets containing materials meant at tarnishing the images of priests. The complaint had named John Prabhu and Gerald Correa as the men behind these objectionable initiatives.

The policemen had not arrested those responsible for these acts. There were rumours that the policemen had summoned the above persons to the police station on Sunday, and had let them go after obtaining written statements from them. This angered the locals, who gathered in front of the police station in large numbers under the leadership of their leaders, and held protest. They also demanded initiation of action against Madantyar Coordination Committee and taluk panchayat member, Vincent D'Souza, who have supported the accused persons on this issue.

Beltangady police circle inspector, Lingappa Poojary, promised the protesters that steps will be taken as per law against the accused persons without any delay. The protest was withdrawn on the basis of this assurance.

The protesters dispersed after asking the police personnel to arrest the concerned immediately. They also warned that they will own stronger methods of protest if the accused are not arrested within a week.

Over 300 people backed by Indian Catholic Youth Movement and several other organizations took part in the demonstration,, which was led by Joel Mendonca.

Hi Sunil suggest the Bishop to through the PPC to send a priest known for public relations and not for power equations. Priest who's heart beats like that of our present pope or St. Marie John Vianny. The other solution is let some of the good experience leaders from the community who are God fearing and know the art of public relations talk to this four persons and find out a solution if they are not the ones involved then the whole parish must compensated for the damage done to their good name. In America they say everyone is entitled to have given a second chance so be it. Even God does so and he told 70X7 to give chance or over look the mistakes of others. And those anonymous letter deserved to be thrown in the waste paper basket by parishioners as well as priest. And this much all Catholics must know before they go to the police station with the anonymous letters.

There is so much to learn from the present Pope for the priest of Mangalore especially his approachability and simplicity. Most of the PPs are like the bosses of the little kingdoms called parishes and all the parishioners are the servants in the diocese of Mangalore. Money becomes their god. They need to become servants of the people and share the power and resources in an authoritative manner instead of taking shelter of Canon law and wield it. The move to bring all the projects under central leadership and carry out on the basis of priority and need of the faithful in a transparent way should be implemented.

With all comments, it is certain that there is something wrong within the community. And Mala-fide intention is evident. The Two groups should come together . The Christian doctrines were pushed to the air by the Clergy in Madanthyar. Always as a matter of fact the Layman will listen what the Clergy is saying. We Gulf people always support our Priests when they come here for donations, though our salary is low . We listen to them and obey them every time. But if there is a second voice ,it is the duty of Clergy to listen patiently. He Can’t be a Adolf Hitler. Now a days the layman judges what is right and what is wrong unlike olden days.
As far as the Anonymous letter , the writer is a coward and God will punish him on right time. Let whole catholic church pray for this Writer , may almighty God take his decision as soon as possible.

    Dear Daiji Readers,
With great respect to your opinions , I would say that Christian faith in Iraq is under threat as of today. So also in Nigeria and so on. Therefore, with humble request to the Church authorities in Mangalore be informed that this in -fight is ashaming. Anonymous letter makes this much problem . Give this part to Police authorities. Let them make detective method to trace the perpetrator. But Blaming and naming Gerald and Joe openly is ridiculous and purposefully to tarnish their image I believe. Please remember the case in IRAQ and Nigeria !!!! Let us pray for them. Clergy and Laity in Madantyar should believe in Good Spirit around them. I pray to the Lord Almighty for the peace in Madantyar.

We have wonderful leader as our Pope, but our grass root is stinking because of non -Christian behavior. Let us solve the problem within the church itself. The report says anonymous letters , then how you conclude the culprits are Prabhu and Correa ? This is the stupidity. Church authorities please wake up. Daiji, please give more details of Pamphlets. I pray to God for peace in Madantyar.

This decision is not solely the decision of ICYM but the decision of 99.99% parishners. Our Church is destroyed due to the selfishness of 4 people. This is not only the cry of Parish Pastoral council or ICYM but it is the shout of the entire madanthyar parishners. This is experienced BT only us and not those who are far away from the parish. Since 10 years we are been compromising with them. But they are not coming out of their selfishness. So this is the last step taken by us. For everything prayer is not the weapon, even Jesus chased those who were trading in the church, he also called cunning fox to Herod., he hated the principles of Judev. We have taken into grant everyones opinion and have come to this decision. 651 families of madanthyar parish are suffering due to this anonymous letters. There should be full stop for these letters or else the entire parish will be destroyed. No one can blame anyone without knowing the fact properly

    Sunil,
I do not know this case in detail. But trouble makers do exist in all communities. Even during the time of Jesus, Judas the betrayer existed. Jesus didn't expel him!
Jesus knew his plans, told others but chose to ignore him.
Judas succeeded in his evil plans, exposed himself and finally committed suicide. That is the fate of people influenced by evil powers.
Jesus succeeded in his mission, he was sent by heavenly father to die for our sins.
Forcefully one can't prevent them writing nasty letters.
For some time yes, but not permanently.
You have to live with problems, culprit will exposed and their plans too will be exposed.

It's nice that you know the Bible well. You also have done your survey nicely. But why don't you have proof the letter was written by them? It can also be somebody else. If you are so concerned about the people suffering then why did you take so long to come up with this? Simply don't point fingers in the air.

If the anonymous letter writers are Joe Prabhu and Gerald as per the complaint-tent then how can it be an anonymous letter? This suggests that somebody is trying to misguide the community by blaming the above persons. If they have definite proof against them it should be brought in notice of everybody, otherwise the problem should be solved amicably between the concern parties. The religious heads should maintain harmony within our community as their duty is to spread the message of Jesus and not get involved in politics. Let us not lose our (Christian Community) respect in the society by taking internal misunderstandings to police station and media.

May be some thing is going wrong. Other wise why should these two fellows would this do this.
Before this I have seen in some other parish these types of pamphlets were distributed by a group of parishioners and all the illegal and own decision activities done by priest were published in those pamphlets. When parishioners dint got right justices there is no way to bring out such things to public. Most of our people blindly supports to the priests. They don’t bother about the incident its right or wrong. They need just praises from priests. In this case parish people must find what the appropriate thing is.
No need of taking such things to up to Police station.

Very nice to see this large gathering of people of the Christian Community....
At the same time it is Very very sad to see the Spirit that is guiding them ....
It is DEFINITELY NOT THE HOLY SPIRIT THAT IS INSPIRING THEM .... Over 300 people (backed by Indian Catholic Youth Movement and several other organizations) took part in the demonstration.... Is there nobody to guide this Youth Movement?
It is a SHAME on us, who call ourselves Catholic ...
Looks like we have adopted Satan as our God .... the one who came to Jesus with the three temptations..
God has Blessed us with a wonderful Pope who is leading us by example. But it is sad to note that WE, by our Unchristian behaviour, are making him appear like a Clown.
Christ's way of solving problems is by kneeling down and praying before God, whom we believe, is present in the Blessed sacrament ....

We are saying there should be communal harmony as well as inter religious harmony.
But this instance shows there is NO harmony within as well. So sad!
Scriptures quote, disputes should be amicably settled within the community but if there is EGO problems, nothing happens.
It happens in all communities, in some it is more and in some it is less.
BUT FOR SOME PEOPLE, THIS NEWS IS FEAST, ENJOYING IN OTHERS TROUBLE! Therefore it is IMPERATIVE THAT the problems are within.
