Mangalore: Shiradi Ghat road to be closed from Dec - alternatives discussed

Daijiworld Media Network – Mangalore (SP)

Mangalore, Jul 26: As extensive repairs and reconstruction are proposed to be undertaken for the Shiradhi Ghat stretch of national highway 75 soon, this road will remain closed for traffic from December 1, 2014 to May 30, 2015. Alternative routes for use during this period are being considered. Three alternative roads have been identified, and two more are under consideration. The proposed alternative roads are Mani-Madikeri-Mysore road, Charmadi Ghat road, and Hulikal Ghat road. The other two proposed routes are Agumbe-NR Pura-Tarikere Road, and Karkala-Kalasa-Chikmagalur Road.

Concreting and repair of work is being undertaken between Gulagalale in Hassan district to Addahole in Dakshina Kannada district at a cost of Rs 155.18 crore. This entails concreting of 26 km stretch of the road and strengthening of 21 km road.

These things came up during discussions at a meeting held at the office of the deputy commissioner (DC) of Dakshina Kannada district on Friday July 25 to discuss alternative routes during the period the ghat road remains closed. This consultative meeting, presided by the DC, was attended by officials of PWD, national highways, KSRTC, police, Mescom, and telecom departments.

Executive engineer of National Highways Authority of India (NHAI), Nataraj, said that it had earlier been decided to close the ghat road from October 30 onwards, but the same was postponed, as identification of alternative roads had not been finalized. On the suggestion to allow one way traffic during the works, he said the road will be too narrow for navigation of vehicles, and machineries, materials and equipments which will utilize the road will pose dangers for vehicles.

When the DC wanted to know whether the Bisile Ghat road can be used as an alternative, PWD executive engineer, Dharmaraju, said that this road is in bad shape, and that it will remain closed during December for repairs. NHAI technical officer said that the processes relating to widening the stretch of national highway between Hasan and B C Road into four-lane road is in progress, and land acquisition process has begun. Along with the repair work, works to widen the road will also be held, he added.

The DC said that diversion of traffic from the Ghat road to other identified roads will increase density of vehicles there. He instructed the NHAI officials to coordinate the work of checking alternative roads with PWD officials and undertake works in these roads wherever necessary to enable them to withdtand heavy traffic. Superintendent of police, Dr Sharanappa, impressed on the need to display boards of instructions at strategic points on these alternative routes, and provide cranes at strategic points for use during accidents.

As per the present proposals, luxury buses, tankers, multi-axle vehicles, light vehicles etc will take Mani-Madikeri road. Government and other ordinary buses and light vehicles will take Charmadi Ghat Road, Tankers and multi-axle vehicles can also take Udupi-Kundapur-Hulikal Ghat-Shimoga-Tumkur route. Light vehicles can also take Agumbe-NR Pura-Tarikere road. The DC asked the officials to write to southern railway, requesting it to run additional passenger and goods train between Mangalore and Bangalore to compensate for the closure of Shiradi Ghat road for traffic.

At present about 700 buses including 400 government and 300 private ones, are using the national highway between Mangalore and Bangalore, it is gathered.

Once upon a time in Mumbai there used to be the Khandala ghat similar to shiradi. Then the government took a bold move and built the Mumbai Pune expressway. Now everybody is happy. Why cant the authorities and politicians take the long term view in mind and decide on a expressway sort of road to get us from DK District to Hassan?. Instead people have allowed the so called port connectivity road to pass through mangalore. This road will be a permanent curse to the people living here. It is time that a bypass road is constructed that will totally bypass mangalore and connect the port/sez/mrpl ETC. to Bangalore through a route that does not displace people. This will also lead to development of newer areas and may perhaps lead to more IT / Electronic/Back office/Call centres etc. firms to relocate to mangalore.

The NHAI appears again to loot the maal! Budget has given more than 20000 crores for highways and Gadkari is planning to plant trees on them!!! All the past hundreds of crores spent have gone down the drain and fallen off the cliff. Sloppy work seen everywhere. We also have another hidden 'highway' (our previous Highways minister, our dear Oscar Fernandesji used to say that our highways are world class!) passing in the middle of Mangalore - the Solapur highway from Nantoor via Kulshekar, Vamanjoor, Moodabidri etc - Isnt it world class?!
So much traffic on Shiradi - especially the oil & gas tankers and big buses. And so dreadful are our alternative routes! In the last 2 years I have driven through all these routes - Shiradi (including a diversion in Sakleshpur through the narrow and unrepaired road to Hassan via Alur & Belur), Charmadi (dreadfully narrow - at many curves, two vehicles cant pass), Sampaje (which too is narrow, holey and dusty). I have used the Kalasa road as well as the Shimoga-Chitradurga road which all are narrow too. Only Bangalore-Hassan and Bangalore-Tumkur-Dharwad-Belgaum road is good but these are Public Toll Paid Highways (not National Highways). Bisile is said to be not even equal to a village road (you can search for videos on youtube for evidence).
Basic necessity for Shiradi is that it should be made 2 lane either side (4 lanes total) with a divider in between. And with so many vehicles passing at night, it desperately needs lighting. If this bare minimum cannot be achieved, then there is no logic of closing the road for another round of sloppy repairs - a joke that is cracked on us by the politicians and NHAI officials with money swindled. Can you imagine even our toll highways have no electric lighting on them?
And before the work can start on Shiradi, the alternative of Sampaje Highway (Mangalore-Madikeri) itself has to be first converted into a 4 lane highway which can help in reducing travel time on this longer alternative.

We do not want just a " Temporary " Alternative Road for Shiradi for only 8 months.
Actually we require " Permanent " alternative Road for Shiradi.
Because even after making Shiradi a Concrete road it cannot handle the pressure of vehicular traffic which is increasing day by day. So, diversion of half of traffic from Shiradi to other alternative road 'Permanently' will help the people to avoid Shiradi and travel to Bangalore more freely. Why govt is not showing far sight and take into consideration future requirement also ?

Maybe Siddu and his gang are planning to take a trip to China to find the best alternative during these repairs.

I cannot imagine the hue and cry for these silly road and rail network issues popping up time after time without any concrete solutions.

Shame to our Karnataka MPs, MLAs and ministers in the Central and state governments.

Why repair and concrete?? , when you can do it 4 lane , when we drive from Medikeri that road is so good even after 3 yrs, it is simple road just removed deep curves thus a very smooth drive, same can be implemented instead of spending 100 cr on concrete and closing for 6 months etc.

I wish these corrupt officials & crooked politicians swiftly pocket the 100's of crores sanctiioned every year & let the helpless public use the moon-cratered, most dangerous highway. Now they have another excuse to increase the toll charges as well as no of toll booths! DVS wants a bullet train (1400 crore) from Ahmedabad to Delhi while SK neither has a proper train nor a safe motorable highway to Blr.
In the past Oscar, Roshan Baig, Reddy, Kharge, Muniyappa...etc looted crores....Well, the story goes on.

I doubt whether they complete the raod within 6 months.Ask Mr.Gowda to double the rail line from Mangalore to Bangalore and each 1 hour passenger trains can be run without any hindrance. Indian railways may take maximum 2 years to complete the project. People shall be happy to travel smoothly in trains without any jerks/shocks than on the road. Anyway One day the rail has to be doubled for the benefit of the coastal people.

All these so called alternative Roads already exist and vehicles going to Bangalore use these roads even now extensively. So why these roads are called alternative routes during Sharadi Repair.
Infact had they upgraded Bisle Ghat Road which connects Mangalore-Sulya-Subrahmanya-shanivara Santhe-sakaleshpura , then we could have called this as new alternative road. But no one has will power to find permanent alternative road to Shiradi even though it is expected that within next 10 years the traffic between this coastal belt and Bangalore is going to increase Three fold.

Really DC Ibrahim sir is doing a wonderful job.We are seeing best DC after Sri Ponnuraj.I hope that the contract work for the proposed concretisation shold not be alloted to local contractors who always failed to deliver quality in the past.State owned corporation or L%T,Nagarjuna are the best for this work.

Southern Railway will introduce additional trains to Chennai instead of Hassan or Bangalore. This question need to be asked to DVS than SR, bcz train may not start even after shiradi work gets completed.
