Secondly as far as Hindu is concern it is not derived from one person thought or book. Hindu means land not religion hence Hindustan, land east of Sindhu River. Hindu is a way of life and Indian way of belief. Not one swami’s/ holy persons belief. I see many my Muslim and Christian friends are having many Indian culture ( Bindi, karimani, understanding every once thought, caste system, from where they got converted. Looking at that i never feel they are only Christian they Hindu Christian and hindu Muslims.

This confirms that we evolved and are not created like what you believe, that the world was created 4000 BC which is roughly 6000 years ago and god created Adam and Eve in his image ???. We had people in earth building civilizations thousand years before this timeline whose image were they created ? . So let us debunk this creation theory, it has no place in science or common sense. Brahmin, Kshatriya, Vaishya and Shudra is ‘Varna’ and not Jaati. And ‘Varna’ means one that is adopted by choice!!
Jaati means a classification based on source of origin. or those having similar birth source form a Jaati (Nyaya Sutra states “Samaanaprasavaatmika Jaatih”.)
Ok now coming back to 4 Varnas
Those who choose to be Arya are called ‘Arya Varna’. Those who choose to be Dasyu become ‘Dasyu Varna’. Same for Brahmin, Shudra, kshathriya and vaishya, so Vedic Dharma is called ‘Varnashram Dharma’. The word Varna itself implies that this is based on complete freedom of choice!!
Who is a bhrahman:- Those involved in intellectual activities have chosen Brahmin Varna
Kshathriya:- Those into defense and warfare are Kshatriya Varna
Vaishya:-Those in economics and animal rearing are Vaishya Varna
Shudra :-Those involved in other support functions are Shudra Varna
SO they merely refers to various choices of professions and have nothing to do with any Jaati or birth.!

In the third century B.C. when the Greeks under Alexander the great invaded India, they referred to Indians as Sindhus and later the British and Europeans called as Hindus, by which they didn’t refer to any religion. In fact the religion that Hindus follow today is more correctly known as Vedaism or the Vedic religion. By the word Hindu, the Europeans referred to a nationality and not religion. In the present day Hindu refers to the follower of Vedic religion and Hindustani as nationality. In this context Mr. D'Souza would have been more correct had he said he is a Christian Hindustani rather than a Christian Hindu.

Secondly, fact has to be accepted that India with Hinduism as major religion is a Hindu country just as Pakistan is Muslim and the U.S. is a Christian country. It is up to the majority to maintain it as secular or theocratic.

He is correct. Hinduism is a way of life and not a religion. We are followers of sanathana dharma which means eternal truth. To make it more clear, it is not faith based or not something one practices. Only an institutionalized religion like Christianity or Islam requires a faith, in the sense you need to fundamentally accept your holy book and it's commandments similar to rules of an organization or institution. I hope you see the difference. This is just informational and nothing to prove one is good or bad.
Having said that there is no conversion in Hinduism. Think of it this way if an institution doesn't exist how do you become a part of it. So if you were to dump your belief or if you were to become an atheist then you could be categorized to be following the truth that you perceive which is eternal truth or Sanathana Dharma. Please remember this was the dharma of your ancestors, one in that lot decided to convert and take over the sponsors name and today you seem to have forgotten your dharma which is no loss to anyone.

This guy is confused and he needs help. Broadly those who lived in the lands south of Hindu Kush mountains (which is modern day Afghanistan) were called Hindu by the Persians and Hindi by the Arabs

But what I find funny is he is calling himself a "Christian Hindu"? A Christian is a person whose subscribes to the ideology as detailed in the 73 books collectively call the Bible, and if he claims India is a Hindu country and he is a Christian Hindu then he is mistaken. Agreed most Christians descend from Hindu forefathers so do most of the Sikhs & Muslims.

I recall a Sikh journalist on the lighter side saying after the anti Sikh riots, when attempts were made to portray the Sikhs as Hindus and so they were termed as Hindus, but with long hair. So the joke was if Sikh’s were Hindus with long hair, then would you call the Muslims as “Hindus who are circumcised”? LOL. LOL

The poet of sub-continent, Allama Iqbal who's popular poetry recites as "Sare jahan se achcha Hind-sthan hamara" , not Hindustan.
The word Hind or Hindu is nothing to do with 'Sanatha Varna Dharma". Varna dharma practising is divided into 4 group Brahmins, Kshthriya, Vyashya and shudra (called upper caste) who forms only 15% of population of India. Dalits, BC's, Muslims, Christians and other minority are Non-Varna Dharma practising religion. It is therefore BJP & RSS combine won't get votes 80% votes. The Non-Upper caste who majority are secular in nature

Dear All ,
It doesn’t matter if you call yourself from muglisthan or Hindustan or any other, but I see just because of the word hindu how lovely the people started to show their tolerance towards certain people belonging to this religious system thinking it only represents the majority !!

India’s age-old philosophy as expounded in Hindu scriptures called Upanishad is “sarva dharma samabhava”(You will not find these golden words other than here), that means it was secular in its stand before the word SECULAR originated and that is because of its so called people who were residing across river Indus(sindhu)!
Further!! The word hindu is misused and misunderstood by most of the people who have no idea(including intellectuals/ & some politicians ) how the word originated , apart from this they try to use Hindu or Hindutva with communal overtones either to promote or oppose some ideology or party and to the rest of the world Hindu word is referred to a set of people belonging to definite religious system(also known as Hinduism).
The fact is that these words "Hindu"(is neither a Sanskrit word nor is this word found in any of o the native dialects. and languages of this country ) and word "India" have foreign origin. Also there is no reference of the word "hindu" in the Ancient Vedic Scriptures.
So it should be noted that word hindu is not a religious word, and if we go by the original definition then any person living in the land beyond the river Indus is a Hindu and whatever religion he or she practices is Hinduism!
The word “ Hindu” itself is a secular word, so it denotes any religion that are practiced in the Indian subcontinent.
I strictly believe India was secular and india will be secular unless this hindu word majority remains!!

A small country like Cylone can change to their Original name as Srilanka after independence.
Why can’t India can change to our original name as Bharathdesh.

In constitution it is clearly mentioned that India is Secular state.(State means country here.

What is secular state/Country: secular state/country also claims to treat all its citizens equally regardless of religion, and claims to avoid preferential treatment for a citizen from a particular religion/non religion over other religions/non-religion.

Secular states do not have a state religion (established religion) or equivalent.

Now Hindu is one of religion of India but it is not our state/country religion.

Mr Prof ,would you mind elaborating the word SECULAR here, I mean Like the word most of the people here want to know whether the word secularism used in Western countries has been used in Indian context???
India’s age-old philosophy as expounded in Hindu scriptures called Upanishad is “sarva dharma samabhava”(You will not find these golden words other than here), that means it was secular in its stand before the word SECULAR originated and that is because of its so called people who were residing across river Indus(sindhu)!

The word hindu is misused and misunderstood by most of the people who have no idea(including intellectuals/ & some politicians ) how the word originated , apart from this they try to use Hindu or Hindutva with communal overtones either to promote or oppose some ideology or party and to the rest of the world Hindu word is referred to a set of people belonging to definite religious system(also known as Hinduism).
The fact is that these words "Hindu"(is neither a Sanskrit word nor is this word found in any of o the native dialects. and languages of this country ) and word "India" have foreign origin. Also there is no reference of the word "hindu" in the Ancient Vedic Scriptures.
So it should be noted that word hindu is not a religious word, and if we go by the original definition then any person living in the land beyond the river Indus is a Hindu and whatever religion he or she practices is Hinduism!
The word “ Hindu” itself is a secular word, so it denotes any religion that are practiced in the Indian subcontinent.
“Yad bhavam tad bhavati,”.. “Sarvey Jana Sukhino Bhavanthu”.. “Vasudhaiva kutumbakam”
