100 acres of land in Bantwal identified for high security prison: K J George

Daijiworld Media Network – Mangalore (SP)

Mangalore, Jul 25: Karnataka home minister, K J George, told the state legislative council on Thursday July 24 that the government has before it a proposal for constructing a high security prison in the coastal region. He was replying to a question raised by MLC, Ivan D'Souza.

"About 100 acres of land falling under various survey numbers spread over Kurnad and Chelur villages in Bantwal taluk has been identified for the construction of the proposed high security prison. Out of this, 63.89 acres of land is already in the possession of the department, and steps are being taken to acquire the remaining 41 acres of land required for the prison through Karnataka Industrial Area Development Board," he explained.

On the current status of the district jail located in Mangalore, the minister said it is meant to accommodate 200 prisoners. He added that a total of 361 male and 12 female prisoners including under-trials have been presently lodged in this jail. He said that the government plans to conduct proper repairs to the old prison building and use the same for housing of notorious prisoners separately in future.

George also revealed that three incidents of fights had occurred within the prison premises, in violation of law, and cases had been registered against the guilty.

When this new Prison comes up in Bantwal the prisoners of existing old prison of Mangalore will be shifted there. In that case this Old prison behind Canara College should be converted in to Bus stand and the present Service Bus Stand near State Bank should be shifted here.

Everyone keeps harping about agricultural land being taken over for many projects.
They should go and make physical check on these agricultural land as to how much land is used for real cultivation. Are there people\labour to cultivate? Does the monsoon smile upon them every year or destroy them every year. These farmers' children are educated now and they mostly do not want to be at the mercy of rain gods for their living. They have seen it all. They have even seen how the Govt. comes to their aid. As such they prefer to be white collared or whatever but not a farmer. As such most of the farmlands are left barren due to this factor. Thy would rather sell if the price is right.
When a project comes up where farmland is taken over, politician themselves instigate people in that area for them to get an opportunity to bargain with the contractor of the project for their share. Most of the agitations\resistance is not from the people themselves.
Check on those high rise residential and business complexes where they have been built? So many gated communities are mushrooming every where taking up thousands of acres of farmland.....

The trouble here in Karnataka is Mr. George , we have 'High Security' prisons for prisoners inside , but 'Low or Hardly any Security' for the common man outside.
Please ponder over this and get your priorities right.
    Good luck!

It is very disappointing to see agricultural land /Industrial land will be used to confine high profile criminals. Is it because govt cannot encourage industries. Land in Dakshina kannada is by default classified as agricultural due to heavy rainfall it gets. Please move this prison to a water scarce region like Gulbarga/Bijapur and set aside Bantwal Taluk land for Industries or Agricultural research.Iam sure there will some vested interest in this scheme like a big politician willing to part with his land for 10 times more than market value else Bantwal was always ignored. There is not even a proper Bus stop in Bantwal. The railway station looks like an STD Booth.

High security prison may be the need, but not so good news!
Give heavy work to prisoners, don't keep them idle, otherwise they will enjoy food, air and security there.
Govt. enacting ENCOUNTER law may reduce crimes, litigation and prison space, but there is scope for MISUSE in rogue states.

What do mean by high security jail are you keeping commandos or Army personal.
First our department need to be trained for high security.
Cant handle a bejai jail of 200 prisoners ,then what will they handle high security....
