Mangalore, Jul 24: A person from the city, who gleefully trusted a caller who said he had won a huge prize money in a lottery scheme, ended up paying Rs 2,40,000 claimed as 'taxes', before finally realizing that he had been duped. He has since filed a police complaint.
Sangameshwara Poojary, a resident of Bijai Anegundi in the city reportedly received a call on July 17 from a lady who identified herself as Divyanjali Gupta representing a company named Shoppe IT Deals. She told him that he had won a sum of Rs 15 lac by way of lucky dip, and for claiming the prize money, he was required to pay tax amount of Rs 50,000 to the government. As advised, Poojary transferred this money through online transfer from his account.
On July 18, he received another call, claiming that a further payment of Rs 1,90,000 needs to be made to claim the prize money. Poojary, who again trusted the caller, passed another online transaction to pay this amount.
After another person, who identified himself as Yuvaraj, called Poojary on July 21, seeking payment of an additional amount of three lac rupees, Sangameshwara realized that he had been duped. He has filed a complaint in Urwa police station, explaining the circumstances under which the money belonging to him was siphoned off by cheats.
