Mangalore, Jul 24: There is a possibility that Dakshina Kannada may be renamed as Mangalore district in the near future.
In a reply furnished at Karnataka legislative council, state revenue minister, V Srinivas Prasad noted that a proposal had been mooted during the golden jubilee celebrations of the formation of Karnataka a few years back, to give new names to some districts including Dakshina Kannada. He said the processes of making changes are on in respect of 12 districts.
Prasad, in reply to a question raised by MLC, Ivan D'Souza during the question hour, said that the proposal to rechristen the districts of Bangalore, Dakshina Kannada, Bellary, Bijapur, Belgaum, Chikmagalur, Gulbarga, Mysore, Hospet, Shimoga, Dharwad and Tumkur. This proposal is under consideration, and processes thereof are on, he clarified.
To a question as to whether specific demands had been received for affecting changes in the names of certain districts, the minister told Ivan that retired Kannada professor of Bangalore University, Dr Chidananda Murthy, and Kannada Geleyara Balaga from Bangalore had sought for changing the names of Dakshina Kannada and Uttara Kannada districts, and their pleas are being examined.
