Dakshina Kannada district to be renamed as Mangalore?

Daijiworld Media Network – Mangalore (SP)

Mangalore, Jul 24: There is a possibility that Dakshina Kannada may be renamed as Mangalore district in the near future.

In a reply furnished at Karnataka legislative council, state revenue minister, V Srinivas Prasad noted that a proposal had been mooted during the golden jubilee celebrations of the formation of Karnataka a few years back, to give new names to some districts including Dakshina Kannada. He said the processes of making changes are on in respect of 12 districts.

Prasad, in reply to a question raised by MLC, Ivan D'Souza during the question hour, said that the proposal to rechristen the districts of Bangalore, Dakshina Kannada, Bellary, Bijapur, Belgaum, Chikmagalur, Gulbarga, Mysore, Hospet, Shimoga, Dharwad and Tumkur. This proposal is under consideration, and processes thereof are on, he clarified.

To a question as to whether specific demands had been received for affecting changes in the names of certain districts, the minister told Ivan that retired Kannada professor of Bangalore University, Dr Chidananda Murthy, and Kannada Geleyara Balaga from Bangalore had sought for changing the names of Dakshina Kannada and Uttara Kannada districts, and their pleas are being examined.

Name change has to be done on priority basis. It is so confusing calling the district with all kinds of names, especially after Udupi is carved out. The best name would be Magalauru meaning daughter's place/town. As only 3% of the women in India have land title in their name let the whole Mangalore be give to them.

When 8 out of 11 taluks in U.K. district speak Konkani, the district rightly deserves to be called as Konkan Dist. And our D.K. should be renamed as Tulu Nadu, so that the Centre should get the message that there are languages other than Kannada in the State.

Who said Tulu is not having Separate Script ? Please read many books published officially by Mangalore University about Tulu Script, which is similar to Malyalam Script. In fact historians say that Malyalam script of today is derived from original Tulu script. Brahmins of Udupi who went as priests of various temples to Kerala spread Tulu script there which later on become official script of Malyalam. Earlier they were using Tamil script to write Malyalam.
In our Tulunadu the Tulu script became extinct after Ikkeri Nayaks started ruling our Tulunadu and imposed Kannada language on us.
Please also visit the library of Dharmasthala Temple where dozens of old manuscripts ( Taale vole patra) of Tulu language are preserved till now.

As the name'Mangalore' has been already in Taluk as 'Maqalore Taluk' and also in 'Mangalore City' the same name for district is not suitable. Since majority of the Mangaloreans are Tulu speaking and very rare kannadigas are here, it is better to change as 'TULUNAD' for D.K.,district. In case a new state is to form combining Kodagu, shimoga, Chikmagalore and coastal districts, it may be named as' Dakshina Karavali'.

There are 30 districts in Karnataka, in that 26 districts speak kannada, 2 districts(Dakshina Kannada and Udupi) speaks Tulu, 1 district(Uttara Kannada) speaks Konkani and 1 district(Kodagu) speaks kodava.
In india most of the district names are named after the district headquarter names but some are named in totally different names, that’s because the region or districts has totally different language and culture. For example Kutch district of Gujarat is the homeland of kutchis and Bhuj is the headquarter, Ladakh district of J&K is the homeland of Ladakhis and Leh is the headquarter , East and west Nimar district of Madhya Pradesh is the natives of Nimadis, Waynad district of Kerala has many tribals, Nilgiri district of Tamil Nadu is native place of Badagas, toda, Kota and Ooty/Udakaamandalam is the headquarter, Araku valley district of Andhra Pradesh has native its home land for 19 distinctive tribal groups(Gadaba, Konda etc). So whole India the unique linguistic district have their own names so Udupi, Mangalore and Kasargod district should be named Tenkana Tulunad, kendriya Tulunad and Badagana Tulunadu accordingly. Uttara Kannada should be renamed as Konkan and kodagu should be remained as Kodagu only.

First and foremost, eradicate the bad name the city has within and outside India for being a highly communal sensitive area of the country.

The attacks on churches and other religions institutions, communal clashes, frequent moral policing have brought bad name to the city.

Let our politicians redress the above issues first and then try for everything else.

@Rem - Because Manga luru, when translated means town of monkeys...(which we are not).

The 'luru' or that extra 'oo' is used by native kannada speakers with a heavy accent...for that matter even when they speak in English they add a 'oo'.

For example - Walkingoo, talkingoo, buyingoo.

"Mangalore" is a globally acknowledged and recognized name...so lets no complicate things.

For that case, even if you translate Mangalore, like you did for Magaluru, 'Manga' remains as it is in both versions. The real translation is 'Mangala' means Shubha (good) and 'Ooru' means town/place. Your version of translation is just manga cheste.

Excellent! Its high Time the name "Mangalore" gets its due. The name Dakshina Kannada makes no sense...secondly, in Mangalore, Kannada is barely spoken.

    Good move!
Mangalore name has its own fame like Bangalore, not only in India but all over the world.
This goodwill is like any top brand name we should retain and not let go.

In Mumbai the people of Tulunadu (Udupi Mangalore dist) are called as 'Mangaloreans' since ages and not as South Kanarese or Dakshina Kannadigas.
Even North Kanara people are called as Karwaris only in Mumbai.
So, calling these two districts as Mangalore and Karwar dist is quite correct.

@ Vijay, The rough translation of the word 'Manga luru' in English is Town of Monkeys.

We aren't a town of monkeys (although we have bajrangis who behave like one here)...but a town of savvy, educated and smart people.

We DO NOT speak with a heavy kannada accent (e.g. Talkingu, walkingu, buyingu like the way our bangalore or mysore counterparts do)

From many decades our district identified and proudly recognized by southcanara..i dont think its a good move by Govt. If they are going to change..then Dr Moilys proposal is may be acceptable- SOUTHCANARA-MANGALORE DIST and SOUTHCANARA-UDUPI DIST.

Just calling only two coastal district as "Kannada district" is inappropriate as all 30 districts of Karnataka are Kannada districts only and they are not Tamil Telugu or Marathi districts.
Funniest thing is that in our D.K. district only 20% people have Kannada as mother tongue as against 80% people speaking other languages as mother tongue and in Uttara Kannada district (Karwar) only 45% people speak Kannada as mother tongue as against 55% people speaking Konkani-Marathi & Urdu. Even though in these two districts Kannada speaking people are in minority still ironically they are called as Kannada district.
Tulunadu is the appropriate name for D.K district.

    Dear Mr.Shenava,
I partially agree with your arguement but want to differ on the following.Name suggested by you as 'Tulu Naadu' is though welcome and may please the Tulu speaking majority people in the dist.Basically Tulu naadu comprises part of Tulu speaking most of the places in Udupi dist too which was earlier part of combined DK dist and people residing in such places may some time object to the idea of naming Mangalore as 'Tulu Naadu'.
Personally I am ardent lover of Tulu language which binds the people like Bhojpuri in Bihar/U.P state.
Newly proposed name 'Mangalooru' or Mangalore denotes Kannada version of 'Mangala oooru' or 'Mangaladevi Ooru' Instead next alternative to name the D K. dist is as KUDLA District which is purely a Tulu version of the place.
I wish add here that there is a great need to include the Tulu Language in the 8th Schedule of the Constitution at the earliest which will fecilitate development of language further.
