Udupi, Jul 21: A well belonging to Usha R Bhat near Kalikamba Temple in Kaup Padu village suddenly suffered a crash and collapsed into further depths of the earth on the morning of Monday July 21. The locals were taken aback at this sudden development.

It is said that at around 4 am on Monday, a thundering noise was heard from the well. Ramesh Acharya and his wife, who stay in the house on rent, came out and observed that the well was getting sucked inside, and its walls were collapsing. The pavement of the well and the pump shed has also got buried underground in the process.

The old well is said to be very deep and there used to be water in it throughout the year. The well that collapsed, met drinking water requirement of the people living in its neighbouhood throughout the year, and it is estimated to have caused loss of several lacs of rupees considering the present cost of construction.

The area had received incessant rains since the last three to four days, and it is felt that excessive enrichment of underground water table around the well would have loosened the soil and triggered its collapse.

People in Karnataka already panicked by the on going issues and I request media not to spread panic by such articles. As mentioned by KRPrabhu, Bangalore, there is nothing special in the news. Since it was heavily rained past few days the loosen mud must have settled down the bottom of the well.

Dear Daijians, I dont think this news had to be given so much importance, it is very common in rainy season specially in coastal region. Nothing to be "surprising". There may be many such incidences without going public, for instance our own well in the field collapsed completely two years back, even now we could not rebuild it...so just dont worry about it...it is not worth in publishing in news media at all....

Looks like very poor construction methods used. Now that pond seems to go to very big enough. So owner needs to be alerted to close the pond by bringing some outside mud or, put some compound to that pond so that no people (especially children) or animals (cows) goes near to that pond. Hope they will do that job urgently. Thanks
