Mangalore, Jul 19: The Kadri police have arrested four persons for kidnapping a building contractor and demanding money from him.
The abductors allegedly forced contractor Dhananjay Mijar into a car at Navabharat circle, Kodialbail on July 14. He was then taken to a hotel in Kadri, where the abductors demanded money and threatened him by brandishing swords. Thereafter, they fled the spot in a Pajero car.
Dhananjay filed a complaint with Kadri police. A team led by inspector T D Nagaraj began investigations, and on Thursday July 17, it was learnt that the accused were planning to escape to Bangalore. The police team swung into action and intercepted them at Bantwal.
The arrested are Harish Tolar (37) of Kundapur, Nagesh (27) of Manila near Vittal, Roshan (28) and John Fernandes (26) from Udupi.
Among them, Harish is said to be a notorious criminal who was formerly an associate of underworld don Bannanje Raja, and is an accused in the murder case of builder Subbarao. He also faces five cases in Bangalore. He had earlier been arrested by the Bangalore CCB in connection to a shootout case.
Police sources said that Harish and Nagesh are the main accused in the kidnapping of Dhananjay Mijar, and that John Roshan had assisted them. Police booked Nagesh and Harish on charges of kidnapping, threatening, attempting to loot, assaulting and possessing weapons illegally. Roshan and John were booked under the Arms Act.
Source said that during interrogation, Harish admitted to the crime. Further investigations are on.
