Beltangady, Jul 16: In a case of moral policing at Ujire here on Wednesday July 16, a group of around 50 persons mobbed a young girl and a boy believing them to be lovers from different communities, only to learn later that they were from the same community and in fact engaged to be married.
A 21-year-old youth and 19-year-old girl were surrounded by the group of people who demanded to know where they were from and what they were doing there. The girl explained that she was a BBM student and had come for her sister's admission at a college.
The boy, a resident of Mudigere, who was with the girl, is said to be her relative. Their families have even fixed their marriage to each other, it is learnt. The girl, a native of Karkala, had come for her sister's admission at a college, and along with the boy, was waiting to take a bus back to Mudigere, when the incident took place. The boy is said to own a mobile shop in Mudigere.
On getting information about the incident, the police rushed to the spot and brought the situation under control.
The police also registered cases against five persons on charges of molestation and some other charges. Sources said that the three persons have already been arrested, but the police declined to confirm or give further information.
