Puttur, Jul 12: Chairperson of the legislative standing committee on the women and child welfare department Shakuntala Shetty, who is also the MLA of Puttur, has urged the government to ban mobile phones in all colleges across the state.
Also, she demanded that when women go to the police station for any reason, the police should not use abusive or discriminatory language, and if they do so, it should be reported. The police should speak and behave decently so that women feel secure. All police stations across the state should be made women-friendly, and a programme aimed at achieving this goal should be initiated immediately, she stressed in her report to the government.
Shakuntala Shetty made these recommendations in a report submitted by the women and child welfare department on various issues like women's reservation, women in cinema field, rape cases in state, life of working women, visually impaired girls' educaton, women's development etc on Friday July 11 in the legislate Assembly.
Though the standing committee has recommended a ban on mobile phones in schools and colleges, it has not explained any reason behind the recommendation. "Students should be strictly prohibited from bringing mobile phones to schools and colleges. The education department should notify the government in this regard," is all that the report stated.
The committee also expressed worry over that fact that in districts like Dakshina Kannada and some others, increasing number of women and girls have been going missing. A thorough enquiry has to be conducted in this regard, the committee urged.
The committee recommended that in order to bring transparency into the functioning of police stations, measures should be taken to install CCTV cameras in every station. Also, women personnel should form 20 percent of the police team in each station, and separate police stations for women should be established. Separate toilets should be constructed for women police personnel and for women who come to police station with complaints, the committee recommended.
