Kundapur, Jul 11: A lady who runs the canteen at Moodlakatte Institute of Technology allegedly attempted suicide here on Friday July 11, after the College management reportedly harassed her over payment of pending dues.

Janaki from Suratkal, who manages the canteen at the institute, in protest against the college for not paying her the dues, not only consumed sleeping pills but also locked herself up in the bathroom and attempted suicide.

Moodlakatte Institute of Technology has about 300 students. The campus includes hostel facilities. Janaki has been running the canteen in the campus for the past one year. The College had been paying Rs 4.60 lac every month to run the canteen, in order to provide to all the students and staff.

However, last month, Janaki received only half the amount in the bill, while the rest, totalling Rs 2.3 lac, was pending. Janaki is said to have approached the management, but she was sent back every time empty-handed. Moreover, towards the end of June, the College reportedly told Janaki that it was cancelling her contract. The College, on the other hand, said that Rs 2.3 lac was withheld on the basis of complaints received from shopkeepers that supplied groceries.

On Friday, Janaki arrived at the College with her daughter and asked for the pending dues again. It is learnt that Janaki, to run the canteen, had bought groceries worth around Rs 6 lac on credit and the shopkeepers had filed complaints against her for non-payment of money, as the College had not cleared the bills.

Frustrated with the developments, Janaki reportedly consumed sleeping tablets and attempted suicide by locking herself in the bathroom. She refused to come out despite pleas from College officials. Finally, Kundapur ASI Sudha Prabhu and other policewomen managed to rescue her and got her admitted to government hospital.

A case has been registered in Kundapur police station.

Even i did my BE in the same college...No facility nothing...Govt hospital foods are better than this college canteen food...Even dog will not eat the food...Neither food is good nor the teaching staff..People with half knowledge comes out to teach us,teach us as if they are reading the nation budget, never care if the students understanding the things...Management hires the lectures based on the influence not on the skill...Blame should go to the management..I request daijiworld to approve this comment, the information or the experience i expressed will help many students while choosing this college..Thanks...

The Politician who founded this College in his village Mudlakatte, was first in Congress, then he joined BJP and became MLA. Then he became Udupi MP from BJP for a short period. Then he lost from BJP against Sorake and left BJP and joined JDS. Then he left JDS also and joined Congress again. Finally he was sidelined in Cong also and booked for sale of spurious Fertilizer in Bihar.
How can such rudderless politicians give good management to any College.

Daiji must investigate deeper into the matter and also publish full report on the day to day affairs of the institution.

Every student must be interviewed privately to get the absolute truth on the shady affairs of this institution.

I also oppose the institute for with holding the bills on the basis of the complaints of the grocery stores etc.

These days Educational institutions owned by Politicians and business men are nothing but Money Making Factories. Absolutely no importance for Academics, sports or extra curricular activities, other than basic class rooms there is no infrastructure - all it does every year are churn out batches of students with some useless degree that cannot fetch them jobs even in shops. Most prospective employers go by the standing of the institution, whereas these so called TECHNICAL INSTITUTES are nothing but workshops with a few lathes.

You hit the nail on its head!! Every TDH politician with big money has opened professional institutions (some proven older ones aside) rest all are substandard and do not have the facilities or faculty to groom even base quality engineers/doctors moreover, what can one expect from the students too who gain entry with such low percentage of marks or by paying capitation fees!! Just degree doling machines with a very substandard product (student) coming out with no acceptance in industry!!

Time has come where many such institutes in rural areas are facing closure as there are no takers for seats!! Every year at around 40,000 engineering seats remain vacant in the colleges of Maharashtra alone!!

It is high time people remove the "myth" from their mind that getting admission for their wards in an engg. college is a big achievement and would grant them high status in Society, those times are gone!!

Although I have veered away from the main subject, it is still relevant in the context of all the negative things going on, and people should open their eyes and think for themselves why such things are happening!!! Jai Hind!!

It is heard that College financial status is in a very bad situation. No salaries have been paid since 4 months. Majority of the faculty members already flew to other colleges. If the same situation continues, the remaining also either will commit suicide or the management may close the college.

Most of the pvt. run professional institutions are only money making machines, they are mostly backed by powerful and rich people so they do whatever they want without any fear whatsoever!! Their "main aim" is to make money, rest is all secondary!!

Recently, per a newsreport, a famous institution in DK was charged with having used crores worth of electric power for free!!LOL!!!

What example are such incidents setting to students who look upon them with utmost respect!!!

The door sign says "Students not allowed". Are students considered second class citizens not worthy of using the faculty bathrooms ? In western countries this would be grounds for lawsuits due to discrimination.
