Clash between two villagers over pipeline project - 10 injured

Belur, Jul 4 (DHNS) : More than 10 persons were injured in a group clash involving the residents of Malenahalli village in Belur taluk, Hassan district, and the residents from 13 villages of Chikmagalur district, over the pipeline laying project on Friday.

A Rs 10 crore-worth drinking water project is being implemented in Belur, which involves the water bodies of more that 13 villages of Chikmagalur, including Belawadi, Kalasapur, Echalahalli, etc.

Under the project, a 4.5-km canal will pass through these villages and the work for the same was being implemented near Malenahalli in Belur taluk.

When huge boulders hindered the project, they were blasted with explosives which left several houses partially damaged.
Since then, Malenahalli residents had been demanding compensation for the damages and were stalling the project.
The residents from 13 villages, on Friday, decided to take the matter unto themselves and arrived at Malenahalli in large numbers to take up the stalled work.

But they were halted by Malenahalli residents. Angered by this, the residents from 13 villages allegedly clashed with Malenahalli residents, leaving a few injured.
The police brought the situation under control and shifted the injured to hospital.

They held a peace meeting between the grieving parties and beefed up security in the area.
It is learnt that the explosions were carried out without the consent of Hassan deputy commissioner. Cases have been booked against both the groups.
