Bishop urges MP to include Mangalore in smart cities plan, provide subsidy to pilgrims

Daijiworld Media Network – Mangalore (SP)

Mangalore, Jul 5: During the visit of Dakshina Kannada member of parliament, Nalin Kumar Kateel, who registered his second successive victory in the recently held Lok Sabha election with a huge margin, to Bishop's House here on Friday July 4, Bishop of Mangalore, Dr Aloysius Paul D'Souza, felicitated him on behalf of all the Christians. On this occasion, a memorandum containing six important demands was also handed over to Kateel.

Demands contained in the memorandum are as under:

- As per reports, the central government has decided to draw an action plan to develop 100 selected urban areas in India into smart cities. Mangalore city has a large number of prestigious educational institutions, hospitals etc, and the city has also carved out a niche for itself at the international level. Hence, Mangalore should also be included as one among the 100 cities proposed to be developed as per the action plan stated above.

- The union government has been extending assistance to Muslims for undertaking pilgrimage to Mecca. Thousands of Christians undertake pilgrimage to holy centres like Israel, Bethlehem, and Jerusalem. Therefore, the subsidy on the lines extended to Muslims should also be given to Christian pilgrims.

- When the BJP was heading the state government, a fund had been created exclusively for the progress of Christian community. The central government too is requested to start such a fund for the welfare of Christians.

- Proposed Niddodi thermal power project, which damages environment and has the potential to drive agricultural labourers to streets, should be shelved.

- There is a need to set up government proejcts which have the potential to provide jobs, in Dakshina Kannada district. At present, youngsters, after completing their education through a number of educational institutions operating here, are compelled to go to far off places in search of jobs. This has been adversely affecting the family system. Therefore, employment-generating projects need to come up here.

- Steps should be taken to protect Indians stranded in Iraq and facing peril because of volatile situation there.

"Agriculture in this part of the country continues to exist because of Christian community. This community has also taken an initiative for maintaining the environment clean. I congratulate them for these contributions. I am happy about the fact that I had studied in an institution in Puttur run by Christians. I will definitely try my best towards ensuring that your demands are met," the MP told the Bishop.

Monsignor Denis Prabhu, public relations officer, Fr William Menezes, secretary of the parish council of Mangalore diocese, Melvin P Noronha, Fr Henry Sequeira, Fr Patric Rodrigues, Fr John Vas, Fr Francis Rodrigues, Raymond D'Cunha, Ranganath Kini, and several others were present on the occasion.

    Moksa in Sanskrit or Kannada.
Jannat in Arabic or Urdu, all mean
    Paradise = Heaven.

For Muslims it is mandatory to go mekka one in a life time as it is one of five pillars of Islam in order to attain Janna = Paradise = heaven.
But it is not in case of Christians as they can pray any time any where and not tied up to a place to attain Janna, heaven. By faith you are saved and not by works alone. Hope I have clarified. No use jumping the gun.

It is not the question of attaining moksha but......
We were taught old testament/bible by Nuns/Priests and we thought that they are just some stories unlike any other novels/stories etc.,
But if a Catholic visits the Holy Land, then you will find every place in accordance with the old testament/Bible. For example:-
Sea of Galilee - One can enjoy the Boat ride where Jesus stopped the Storm. When you sing the National Anthem with Indian flag, one will really feel proud to be there at that moment.
The miracle of multiplication of Bread and Fish - The pilgrim can really enjoy the afternoon meal with big fresh Fish,Rice, salad etc.
The Cana Church - Miracle of water turning into wine - Masses will be held by the accompanying priest, and one can taste the wine. Though the lanes are narrow, every house is selling wine and souvenirs.
Bethlehem the birth place of Jesus - one can see the manger but have to wait in queue.
The mount Sinai - exactly what is mentioned in the old testament.
Calvary - place of crusifiction - Tomb of Jesus, the church - one can see the large number of pilgrims visiting from all over the world.
    So do not miss opportunity.

Subsidies are really disguised handouts ,doesn't make economic sense in the long term ,its like ,giving in one hand and taking in another, because of it lot other progressive activities are put on a back burner ,hopefully it should be systematically eliminated, only the ones directly effecting the needy should be in place.

It is great gesture from the Bishop and the christian community to talk with the local MP. There are certainly good and important point raised by the memorandum which is good for the whole society. secondly, Bishop did not say every christian must go to pligrmage. He suggested to extend the help to the christian community too. what is wrong in it? In my view Bishop has taken right step and picking up one small point and critising him is unfare and unbecoming of us.

Felicitating our district MP and giving a memorandum with Demands (Request should be a appropriate word)shouldn't have been our protocol. Are we bartering with our MP ?? If I am wrong then Why same things are not done with our MLA & MLC ??? Specially asking for Pilgrimage subsidy as Muslims are enjoying is a stupid idea.

PM Modiji strictly told to BJP MPs to look after the development of only their constituency and not to give false promises and not to give lecture on other issues.I hope Nalin will focus on only District level development issues purely regarding Roads,CiViC issues, people friendly admin, proper law and order which will help irrespective of religion/caste creed.Sab ka saath sab ka vikas shud be the mantra of Mr. Nalin.Forget about who voted and not all will realise one day.

In my opinion mostly the rich go for such pilgrimages. Then why should give subsidy??? Let them spend their richness. After all what is the real need that all should go for such pilgrimages??? If one can not afford then let not go. What is important??? Is it going to a pilgrimage or leading a very, very, very good religious life???

Going to pilgrimage-Is it not becoming a fashion and a business??? Unless we make our everyday life journey till the end a pilgrimage to God, no amount of any other pilgrimages have effect on our life. Thank you and God bless each one of us.

While I agree to all the points, except one!! "subsidy".. Subsidies are killing people already! such subsidies are hampering development and rest of better activities, which would have been applicable to all the communities at large!! I propose to get rid of these subisidies completely, while slowly! Muslims and Chrisitians from ur region are well off cos of Gulf jobs and they should come forward and willfully give up subsidies! especially "churches in india" are richest bodies, out of tax ambit with acres of land all over! their people r well educated and good jobs available to them all over the world too! While one side u tax the hindu temple organistations and bring them under govt. supervision and leaving away other religious centers for votebank politics and secularism natak..it sounds bad, for me being a hindu! else give me the subsidiy to travel by air to rameshwaram, Kashi, kalahasti too -)

100% agree..for how many religion you will give subsidy..no party will give subsidy from their pocket..these subsidy will further burden the poor tax payer & price rise..Instead of subsidy for pilgrimage it is better to urge Govt to purchase property in religious places to give free accommodation to the people..by the way, why OSCARANNA didnt tried for subsidy/minority fund during 10 years of UPA rule..new minority minister is heading in right direction saying that she will remove the notion that minority ministry is not exclusively for a single minority community..we can see some drastic changes under MODI leadership..
