Mangalore, Jul 4: A protest was held by the Dakshina Kannada Beedi Workers' Federation under the banner of All India Trade Union Congress (AITUC) and South Canara Beedi Workers' Federation (CITU) at South Canara Home Industires, Lalbagh here on Friday July 4, urging payment of dearness allowance.
The beedi workers marched from Ballabagh bus stand to South Canara Home Industires, Lalbagh, where they held a protest meet.
Speaking to the media, CITU secretary J Balakrishna Shetty said, "The government has ordered the beedi employers to pay Rs 21.15 as dearness allowance (DA) per 1000 beedis with effect from April 2014. But many of the employers have failed to follow this. The labour commission must consider this issue seriously and do the needful.
"It has been almost four months since April, but no action has been taken to implement the new DA structure. We have also handed over a memorandum to various beedi owners and other associations, but in vain. We will not stop our fight unless and until we get justice in this matter," he asserted.
"In Dakshina Kannada more than 6 lac beedi workers are facing financial problems. BJP and Modi government lied to the people of India that they would bring down the prices. But now prices of fuel, electricity, vegetables, gas and many other essential commodities are hiked," he added.
Sitaram Berinje addressing the protestors, said, "Workers are not provided with any kind of facilities in the factories."
"Employers are here just to make profit, they are not worried about their workers," he added.
B M Bhat and others were present during the protest.
