Mangalore, Jul 4: A protest was held by the Dakshina Kannada Beedi Workers' Federation under the banner of All India Trade Union Congress (AITUC) and South Canara Beedi Workers' Federation (CITU) at South Canara Home Industires, Lalbagh here on Friday July 4, urging payment of dearness allowance.

The beedi workers marched from Ballabagh bus stand to South Canara Home Industires, Lalbagh, where they held a protest meet.

Speaking to the media, CITU secretary J Balakrishna Shetty said, "The government has ordered the beedi employers to pay Rs 21.15 as dearness allowance (DA) per 1000 beedis with effect from April 2014. But many of the employers have failed to follow this. The labour commission must consider this issue seriously and do the needful.

"It has been almost four months since April, but no action has been taken to implement the new DA structure. We have also handed over a memorandum to various beedi owners and other associations, but in vain. We will not stop our fight unless and until we get justice in this matter," he asserted.

"In Dakshina Kannada more than 6 lac beedi workers are facing financial problems. BJP and Modi government lied to the people of India that they would bring down the prices. But now prices of fuel, electricity, vegetables, gas and many other essential commodities are hiked," he added.

Sitaram Berinje addressing the protestors, said, "Workers are not provided with any kind of facilities in the factories."

"Employers are here just to make profit, they are not worried about their workers," he added.

B M Bhat and others were present during the protest.

The men at the forefront of the procession are those who forcibly grab the hard earned wages at the end of the for a 'quarter'. They are not aware that BJP is in the process of building a strong financial base for the country by correcting the muddle created by the Congress. Such cleansing does have temporary repercussions for a stable strong India.

Though Beedi smoking is injurious to health, beedi rolling has helped many families in South Canara survive. While this meager income by the womenfolk kept the family rolling, while the big income earned by their husbands never reached home, due to their drinking habit. So, Modi or Beedi, these poor women need justice!

Beedi workers demand for pending dues is very much welcome and genuine but it is not fair to blame Modi government blindly, which is still in infant stage.Yes,I do agree with your view points.BJP and Modi has definitely promised in his election manifesto would bring down the prices of the essential commodities. But the time when he took over the charge is very bad due to so many factors. These facts only few people can understand. At this juncture he has to accept criticisms. and survive with all the odds but soon definitely he will bring changes as per the people's expectation. This time is very bad for him due to the impact of Iraq's internal conflict, absence of expected monsoon and non-production of agricultural production due to non arrival of timely rain and so many other issues.although Modi has promised,Modi alone cannot bring any overnight change or perform miracle.

People should realize what is our contribution towards the development of the nation.Only to organize rally, protest and criticize?Under the present scenario any government would not have done any miracle. Before criticizing oen must question himself, what they have done or will they do anything for the growth of the country?I am not the supporter of any parties but what I need and my intention is to have stable government with able leader.Whether it is BJP,MODI,Congress or anybody else.I don't mind and bother. My only advise, suggestion and request with the people to support the government for the prosperity of the nation and kick off and throw the corrupt officials/government.jai Hind,Jai Bharat.Bharat Mahan Hai.Talk does not cook the rice
