Kasargod, Jul 2: Police team led by DySP T P Ranjith have arrested four persons reportedly involved in sand mafia for trying to knock down ASP and other policemen with their tipper truck when they tried to intercept them while illegally carrying sand on Sunday, June 29 morning.
The police have also seized the car and the tipper used in the attempt to kill the police officials.
The arrested are identified as Seethangoli Mukharikanda resident Aboobacker Siddique alias Kichamani Siddique (18), Seethangoli resident Vijay Crasta (21), Angadimogaru resident Farzil Ahmed (23) and Seethangoli resident Abdul Azeez (22).
While the incident had occurred at Perla on Sunday night, the suspects were arrested on Wednesday July 2.
The tipper with sand plying from Karnataka to Kerala had sped past the police team patrolling Perla, ignoring their signal to stop. The tipper then drove into an inner lane when the police officials came chasing in their jeep. When the police jeep tried to overtake the sand-laden tipper, those inside the truck tried to immediately unload the sand on the jeep and endanger the lives of the policemen. The policemen fired at those in the truck, which by then unloaded sand on the road and fled away. The truck and the car then escaped in different directions, and the police are searching for both.Besides the sand mafia has tried to pour the sand from their tipper over the Jeep. The police have shot four rounds to escape from danger. The suspects had escaped in the incident but the police had seized on the next day the tipper and the car which had come to guard the tipper.
A team led by DySP T P Ranjith was assigned the task of investigation. The team has succeeded in arresting the accused within three days.
The tipper was bought by the accused about two months ago. It is said that the accused are in sand business for the last three years.
