Beltangady, Jul 2: A student was washed away in a rivulet at Putrabail in Laila village in the taluk on Tuesday July 2. The victim, Farooq Ismail (12), was a student of Laila Karnodi higher primary school.
On Tuesday, the boy performed namaaz at the local mosque before approaching the nearby rivulet for taking bath. When he was bathing, he was washed away due to flash floods caused by heavy rains in the upper catchment areas of the rivulet, sources said.
The other children, who had accompanied Ismail to the rivulet, raised an alarm, after which locals rushed to the spot and brought Ismail ashore. He was taken to the government hospital here, but the doctors said he had breathed his last sometime earlier.
Karnodi government school observed holiday on Tuesday in honour of its student who accidentally lost his life.
The boy has left behind parents, a brother, and a sister. Headmaster and teachers of the above school, zilla panchayat member, Shylesh Kumar Murtody, SDPI president, Akbar Beltangady and others visited the house of the deceased and offered condolences to the grief-stricken family members. They also promised to ensure that the government disburses suitable compensation to them at the earliest.
On the basis of a report filed by a cousin of Ismail, a case of unnatural death was registered in the police station here.
