Mangalore, Jul 1: A court here, which found after conducting hearings that Raju (39), residing near the graveyard of Boloor in the city, who was facing the charges of committing atrocities on his wife and extracting money from her, besides posing threats and defrauding her, is guilty of these charges.
The court of the chief judicial magistrate here, through a judgment delivered on Monday June 30, sentenced him to one year simple imprisonment apart from imposing on him a fine of Rs 25,000. The judgment has also prescribed that failure to pay the fine will extend his jail term by six months.
Out of the above fine, Rs 20,000 should be paid as compensation to Raju's wife, Baby Raj, the court ordered.
The court however, exonerated second defendant in the case, Hamalata from Tannir Bavi, who was claimed to be the second wife of Raju, as charges against her could not be proved to the satisfaction of the court.
Raju, an electrician by profession, had married Baby Raj from Boloor Parapu here, several years ago. The couple has three children. He reportedly brought pressure on her to borrow money by pawning her gold jewellery, duly expressing a desire to own a car. After she handed over the amount of loan so raised, Raju deserted his wife and started living with another woman illegally.
Baby Raj had filed a complaint with the womens' police station here on December 6, 2010. Police sub inspector of this station, Girija, registered the case, and submitted charge sheet to the court after holding investigation.
Senior public prosecutor, U Srinivas Hegde, had appeared in the case on behalf of the prosecution.
