Beltangady, Jun 28: A young woman who is reportedly mentally ill was abandoned by her own family at Ujire bus stand here on Thursday June 26 evening.
25-year-old Shaila was seen roaming around Ujire bus stand during the night, an when locals enquired about her wherabouts, it came to light that her own family members had left her in the middle of the town. She is said to be from Chikmaglur. Her family reportedtly brought her to Beltangady to admit her in an ashram, but due to lack of space in the ashram she could not be admitted there.
Local social activists Gracian Veigas, Ravi Chakkitalaya and Ujire gram panchayat president Balakrishna Gowda provided her a stay in a Ujire house, and later on Friday morning admitted her to Seon Ashram.
It is learnt that Shaila hails from a rich family but they do not want her. Beltangady sub-inspector Prakash contacted woman activist Jyothi, and helped Shaila get admitted in Seon Ashram.
Police are learnt to have traced the address of the family that abandoned the girl.
People around Ujire expressed shock and condemned the family's inhuman act.
