Mangalore: City's fire service gets a boost with 'high'-end Bronto Skylift

Daijiworld Media Network - Mangalore

Mangalore, Jun 27: The might of the city's fire fighting service has just gone several notches higher, literally, if one may add.

The Pandeshwar fire service, which comes under Karnataka Fire Service and Emergency Services, has procured a high-end fire engine that is equipped with aerial ladder platform (ALP) to reach tall buildings of 10-12 storeys. With the city's real estate growing as it is, a fire engine that could reach the top floors of high rise buildings had become a necessity.

The Bronto Skylift F 32 RLX, mounted on a Volvo chassis, and said to be costing around Rs 5 crore, arrived at the premises of the chief fire officer of Karnataka State Fire and Emergency Service, Pandeshwar on Wednesday June 25.

The RLX range is one among the four ranges of Bronto Skylift rescue and fire fighting applications. The letters stand for Rescue Ladder eXtra versatile, symbolizing the enhanced qualities of this particular range.

The RLX models represent the most advanced features of aerial ladder platforms. The aerial ladder can reach a height of 32 m with a maximum outreach of 23 m, making it capable of covering the topmost floors of most buildings in the city. The fire engine has a water capacity of 3,800 litres/min. Moreover, the cabin, where all the controls are located, is air conditioned, computerized and spacious enough to accomodate at least three persons.

The fire engine, which was earlier stationed in Bangalore, will be formally launched by deputy commissioner A B Ibrahim next week, after which it will begin operating whenever required.

Why you are all worried about 32 storied buildings etc.
This is the one and only such lift in the fire dept. family and that too it is in Pandeshwar. If fire breaks out in moodubidri\padubidri and all other bidris on the 5th to 12th floor this lift will have no use for them.
If such lifts are available in all fire stations where more than 4 storied buildings are built (which is every where now) then we can heave a sigh of relief.

Which brings us to the question who approves 20 - 30 stories tall buildings in places like Mangalore when we no contingency plan for fires. We have no fire hydrants, no modern fire fighting equipment to fight large fires and no cranes to reach above 8 stories. So in case there is a fire in one of those tall buildings, people are on their own.

Be happy - earlier it was only upto 4 floors - now they can reach 10-12 floors - which is really very good and people living in those type of building can say they are a bit carefree if fire breaks out or some other situation arises. As the time passes the facilities will improve.
Everything takes time in India...because of red tape...

Good...but for heaven sake give them protective clothing to keep the brave firemen safe. These guys just go out to fight fire in their normal uniforms. Whats wrong with India, our firemen are working in such unsafe conditions. Even countries like Nigeria have given their firemen protective clothing.
