The accused, Mohammed Haneef alias Batlu Haneef (42), a resident of Hidayatnagar, Uppala, had been absconding since May 2013.
It may be recalled that on May 13, 2013, Kasargod police had intercepted a Tata Sumo plying from Thrissur and seized 52 kg of ganja that was being transported hidden in the roof of the vehicle. K M Nawaz (32) of Kottayam, who was driving the Sumo, and C H Saleem (32) of Nileshwar were arrested.
Further investigations into the case led to the arrest of Shaji, Raghu and Roy. The police then got hold of some important documents that revealed Haneef as the mastermind of the drug peddling racket. His role was further proved with the investigation of bank account details and a diary that the police had laid their hands on.
However, Haneef went absconding soon after the confiscation of the ganja. Finally, after a year of investigation, the police succeeded in arresting Haneef in Uppala.
