Bijapur: Little Akshata's body retrieved from borewell after 52-hour effort

Daijiworld Media Network - Bijapur

Bijapur, Jun 20: The 52-hour effort to rescue four-year-old Akshata, who fell into a borewell on Tuesday June 17, ended tragically with the rescue teams retrieving the girl's lifeless body on Thursday June 19 night.

Akshata, daughter of Hanumanth Maipatil and Savitri, both farm labourers, had accidentally fallen into an abandoned borewell at Dyaberi village near Nagatana in the district at around 7.30 pm on Tuesday June 17.

The incident occured when Akshata was walking home with her father. Initially, her parents themselves frantically tried to rescue her, but in the process, mud piled up on the girl which further worsened her situation. Rescue teams were called from various places, including from Hatti Gold Mines, and Sangli and Pune in Maharashtra. Around 10 JCB earthmovers were pressed into action to dig a parallel tunnel to reach the girl. However, the task became difficult due to the presence of hard rocks.

Manikantan, a researcher who has invented a robot that helps rescue people who get stuck in borewells, was brought from Bangalore in a helicopter at the instance of district in-charge minister, M B Patil. Though he attemped to rescue the girl a few times, the efforts went in vain.

On Thursday night, the teams finally managed to reach the girl, only to find her partly decomposed body. A doctor who was on standby at the site said that Akshata might have died about 24 hours ago on Wednesday June 18 night. He said that the mud and water that got deposited on her during the rescue efforts might have blocked the oxygen supply and suffocated her to death. Though oxygen pipes had been passed down the borewell, the rescue teams were not certain whether the pipes had reached the girl at all.

Bijapur district incharge minister M B Patil expressed his condolence at the demise of the girl. He appreciated the efforts of the rescue teams and the district administration in doing their best to save the girl.

The girl's body was shifted to a hospital for post-mortem.

    Dear readerwriter007, pune
I fully agree with you. Sometime due to contents of news we totally focus on one direction and we actually lose the core issue.
This is not the first incident in India, so many similar incidents occurred. Administration should have given the order to identify the open bore wells and normal wells which have no boundary walls. If found a notice to be given to take appropriate measure. However, sorry to say, in the above case minister used all the resources of public. I mean to say it will be added to government balance sheet as sundry expenditure and passed to public.

Very Sad and tragic incident.May her soul rest in peace.
This is not the first incident and we haven't learned any lessons. What happened to those murderer contractors. Did they get punishments in past? Lets have one example of hanging these contractors or the people who left this bore well pit opened and publish the pictures of hanging major news papers, TV channels etc. This is nothing but carelessness and WHO CARES attitude.

Feels frustrated and sad hearing same types of news. All because of somebody's negligence, kids are paying for it. I do feel, we as citizen also can do something about it. Whenever we see some holes or borewells open, we can inform the local authorities to fill them or cover them . If all of us just keep an eye on roads, such incidents can be surely minimized. Each of us , if we take responsibility of changeing our cities. It can be done. All of us have to join. We have that potential.

I completely agree the responsible(well irresponsible) persons should be caught. readerwriter007, pune rightly said who is going to bare the cost of the entire rescue operation?
This is not the first time it is happening. Its clearly mentioned as borewell so the contractors should be taken to task.
    How can they do free?
Daiji please check on the previous cases of such disasters and let us know were any measures taken at all?

I trust we are mislead in this incident. everybody spoke about rescuing this little girl. Nobody spoke about the culprit who is prime responsible for this disaster. Who the hell kept that borewell open. How can he go escaped so easily. What a disaster and tension for whole city. Catch hold of all those responsible and I am ok putting them in this borewell back and bury them Let them feel the same pain which this little girl Akshatha had experienced. No mercy please. One more question at mind. I am sure lakhs and crores of rupees spent on this rescue action. So many JCPs, Helicopter also used if I am not wrong. who is going to bear this expense. I want all these expenses to be put on the same contractor who is responsible to keep the borewell open. Trust everybody agrees on this.

Its impossible to imagine the suffering this little girl went threw due to the greediness and irresponsibility of someone else's. Its shocking the magnitude in which such cases are repeating , shows creepiness of public and legal machinery. This is not a accident but a man made fault , which stole someones life. May Good God have mercy on this little soul.

In rural areas, the monitoring of the above is to be done through village Sarpanch and the utive from the Agriculture Department.

May The Good Lord console the parents and relatives of Akshata.

Very often - in this world we do not achieve what we wish to attain but it is the effort that counts.

We must say kudos to all that made such concerted attempts to rescue this unfortunate child. One must indeed compliment Sri Patel The District Minister for going out of his way to fly special equipment to conduct the rescue operations.

minister mb Patel offered condolence and appreciated the efforts of rescue team. Any human being if he is cannot digest this. Not even a single lawmaker is concerned or able to make a law those who digged means contractor and those gave this contract means those you eventually own this bore should be severely punished.

Another life lost due to sheer negligence. What wrong has little Akshata done to die in such a manner. How many more Akshatas do we have to sacrifice before the Government opens their eyes. Stringent action should be taken against those responsible for such incident. Further, in today's world, when people are leaving their footprints in the moon, are not enough equipped to bring out a child within the first few hours. Is out technology so outdated that we watch the child die a slow death. There are so many brilliant brains in India. I hope they bring out some kind of equipment so that the rescue can be done within the first few hours.

Very Sad and tragic incident. Hope people learn lesson from this kind of incident to value human life and to take precautions. A simple step to cover the hole with rock would have saved the girls life and all these efforts to save her. I am sure people will talk about it for sometimes and forget and dig more bore wells just to abandon them, if they dont get water. If people learn to take care of these things, our country will improve. Rest in peace girl, you were too valuable and precious to leave in this country. This country was not worth to have you.
