Kundapur, Jun 18: A passenger died and several others were injured after a private bus tumbled down off the road on Wednesday June 18 morning at Halady in the taluk. It is said that the driver of the bus lost control over the vehicle, as its axle broke down.

The ill-fated bus had left Siddapur at 6.50 pm on its way to Udupi. It crossed Shankarnarayana sometime later, and was crossing Halady Bridge, when the axle of the bus snapped. The driver as a result, could not control the speed and direction of the bus, which was then moving down on the steep road near Maruluchikku Temple. The bus then hurtled off the side of the road.

The bus had a sizable number of students and others who were bound to their schools and workplaces. Sumanth (19) lost his life on the spot, while a number of students and other passengers suffered grievous injuries. The injured were shifted to hospitals in Manipal, Kundapur, and Halady, depending on the nature of their injuries. The bus driver is said to have suffered critical injuries. A case was filed in this connection at Shankarnarayana police station.

The deceased was a native of Shankarnarayana. He worked for a firm in Hebri. Some passengers who survived the ordeal without being hurt said that Sumanth had come running from behind after the bus started its onward journey, and boarded the moving bus a few seconds after it left the bus stand. It is said that he was in a hurry as he thought he might reach his workplace late if he waits for next bus. He would have survived if he had arrived at the bus stand a few seconds later.

Several locals gave vent to their anger at the total apathy being shown by owners of private buses towards passenger safety. They alleged that this accident occurred, as the bus operator failed to maintain the vehicle in good condition through periodical inspection and maintenance. A large number of locals and passengers favoured running of government buses in place of private ones, as they feel that transport department follows rules relating to vehicle maintenance and passenger safety strictly.

This is not only experienced in Shankarapura or somewhere else. This is common trend almost in every part of the undivided Dakshina Kannada district.Drivers are playing at the cost of the lives of the commuters.Rough, rude and unethical driving especially in city buses.Drivers are playing like circus. They don't bother about the lives of the passengers. They think that they are performing some miracles, adventures. Why such drivers are being recruited? Do they have any humanity, sympathy, courtesy? Why private bus owners are keeping silent?

Now a days Sri Durgamba Buses are very dangerous for travel. I believe that they do not do proper maintenance as well the buses also very old. Once I had been Traveled with Sri durgamba Bus from Kundapur to Bangalore. when we reached the Udupi, The Driver said that, both the Headlights are not working. still he continued the journey by following another bus. That bus suppose to go till Jayanagar 4th block. But when he reached Majestic, they observed that, the diesel tank was leaking.
Its really dangerous to travel with Sri durgamba Buses. There should some standard to allow the buses to carry the passengers.

ALL private buses in Mangalore hardly have any time for weekly / fortnightly / monthly or annual maintenance. These buses should be subjected to such compulsory stringent tests like the one carried out here in Qatar which needs to be crystal clear. Every single part here is observed on the computer and remedial measures are taken to improvise further on the output (mileage and road worthiness) depending on the vehicle age. Only after the tests are fully carried out subject to satisfactory working of the vehicle, the rest of the process is completed and handed over to its owner. Needless to say since the vehicles here outnumber traffic polices, ed companies are assigned the task of doing the needful and reverting back to the traffic authorities under their own responsibility.

RTI should check all the 3 years or more older private buses once in a 6 month. If no proper maintenance then license must be cancelled !!

Axil must have broken due to the impact. (tumbling)

So many reasons once the mishap had taken. Limit the speed and reckless driving so that there could be some control in avoiding a major disaster.

This is not an excuse, bus axle broke, what about brakes. Durgamba buses are death agents as they have a very strong lobby. Very sad about the loss of a youngster. Looking at the impact its a miracle, hope all get well soon.
