Police again summon Bengali filmmaker Suman Mukhopadhyay

Kolkata, June 14 (IANS): The West Bengal police have again summoned filmmaker and theatre director Suman Mukhopadhyay for questioning in connection with the alleged suicide bid by Bengali actress Swastika Mukherjee, police said Saturday.

Suman, said to be close to the actress, was questioned for over 22 hours in May.

"In pursuance of our investigation regarding the alleged suicide attempt by the actress, we have come across some more evidence and have served a notice of appearance on Mukhopadhyay," an officer of the Bidhannagar Police Commissionerate said.

"We have come across evidence which not only indicates it was a suicide bid but also suggests attempts were made to tamper with the evidence. So we have summoned him for questioning," said the officer, adding the actress may also be interrogated at a later stage.

The officer said Mukhopadhyay has been asked to appear before police by Tuesday.

The families of the actress as well as that of Mukhopadhyay have rubbished claims of a suicide bid, asserting she received injuries in a fall.

Swastika was hospitalised with a cut in her wrist in May and later released, following corrective surgery.

Known to be vocal against the Mamata Banerjee government, especially after one of his controversial movies was denied certification, Mukhopadhyay along with several other eminent personalities have questioned the "overzealousness" of the police.

Advocate and former city mayor Bikash Ranjan Bhattacharya too has questioned the role of the Bidhannagar police which has also been investigating the multi-crore rupee Saradha chit fund scam.

"Just to harass him, they (police) have again summoned Suman, why this overzealousness in this case? Why don't they show the same zeal while investigating the Saradha scam in which they have failed to make much headway," said Bhattacharya.
