Sullia, Jun 14: Subrahmanya police have succeeded in arresting five persons, who used to loiter around temple premises in the guise of devotees, and steal gold ornaments and other valuables from visitors to the temple who are less careful. The police revealed that the gang members are natives of Bhadravati in Shimoga district.
The police could confiscate gold ornaments worth about six lac rupees in this case. On being produced in the court, four of them were remanded to judicial custody, and one to police custody.
The police had prior information that a gang which was indulging in the tactics of diverting the attention of gullible devotees and then pocketing their valuables was active around Lord Subrahmanyeshwara temple in Subrahmanya since sometime. During investigation, they grew doubtful about the movement of five people including two women.
Acting on reliable information, the police arrested Durga (23), Susheela (26), Nagaraj (23), Hanumant (27), and Manoharan (59). It is learnt that the gang members confessed that they had sold the ornaments they had stolen, to a jewellery shop in Bhadravati. On the basis of this confession, police personnel, who were deputed to Bhadravati, recovered these ornaments having a market value of about six lac rupees, from that shop.
The operation was led by Subrahmanya police sub-inspector, Nagesh Kadri, under the guidance of Sullia police circle inspector, Satish B S.
