Daijiworld Media Network – Mangalore (SP)

Mangalore, Jun 12: On Wednesday June 11, four inmates of the district jail here, who are said to have led the recent incident of friction with the policemen, were shifted to Gulbarga jail.

The persons so shifted have been identified as Shameer and Samshuddin who were named as accused in the Deralakatte forced sex case, Safwan who was arrested for theft, and Sahir.

It is gathered that these four, besides opposing the decision to shift two inmates of the jail, Muhammed Faizal, and Talhat Koya Tangal to Dharwad jail, had also instigated others to resist this move. Sources said that a decision to shift these two persons had been taken on the basis of complaints of harassing other jail inmates, and as a disciplinary measure against failure to stick to jail rules, in consultation with higher officials of the department.

Some senior police officers visited the jail on Wednesday for inspection. During the visit, which lasted for four hours since 7 am, they found ganja packets and mobile phones, it is said. The inspecting team comprised of deputy commissioners of police, Vishnuvardhan and Dr K Y Jagadish, besides assistant commissioners, Tilakchandra and Pavan Nejjur.

In tune with the promise made by the DIG (prisons) during his recent visit to the hail, 15 personnel have already been deputed to the district jail here from other jails in the state. Order relating to these deputations was issued by the director general of prisons, Gangandeep, who had personally verified the conditions in the jail in response to complaints of the inability of the jail staff to control frequent incidents of fights within the jail premises because of paucity of personnel. He had promised to provide additional staff to the jail, besides taking steps to install closed circuit television cameras at strategic points.
