Kundapur: Breakwater at Gangolli at Rs 102 crore: Abhaychandra Jain

Kundapur, Jun 10: “The construction of the breakwater at Gangolli is a joint project of the union government and the state government and has been approved at a cost of Rs 102 crore. The work will commence soon after obtaining the cabinet approval," said state fisheries minister Abhaychandra Jain.

He was speaking to reporters during his visit to the Gangolli port on Tuesday, June 10 to inspect the spot proposed for the construction.

"The government will emphasize on the development of the port, which ease the pressure on the Malpe port," he said.

"The central government has not included subsidy on kerosene for fishermen, because of which they were put to hardship. Our delegation met the minister of food and civil supplies Dinesh Gundu Rao and requested him to solve the problem, as a result of which Rs 6.75 crore was released on June 3. Kerosene is being distributed through MRPL and any minor inconvenience will be set right," he said, adding that fishermen will not face kerosene problem during the next season.

Abhaychandra Jain and MLA K Gopal Poojary were felicitated on the occasion. Fisher women were given fish boxes, life jackets and eligible fisher women were handed over cheques under Matsyashraya project.

MLA K Gopal Poojary in his introductory address said that 500 applications for houses from fishermen are pending and the government should provide houses for them in the taluk. The roads used for transporting fish are damaged in the coastal region and the government should provide funds for concreting roads, he said. He thanked the government for having provided Rs 102 crore for the breakwater project.

Joint port office director Ganapathi Bhat, fisheries deputy director M D Prasad, fisheries department's H S Veerappa Gowda, Keshava Kunder, Surendra Kharvi and others were present. Assistant director of fisheries department Ravi M welcomed.

The minister subsequently visited the inner harbour being built at Maravante and inspected the progress.

 

Udupi: Fishing port at Malpe to be ready soon—Abhaychandra Jain

Udupi, Jun 10: Abhaychandra Jain, minister for fisheries and youth services and sports, on Tuesday June 10, inspected Malpe fishing port and said that the third stage of the port will be finished soon.

He added that Rs 337.15 crore has already been released in order to complete the final stage of work.

Speaking to the media, Jain said, “An amount of Rs 122 crore has been released for the fourth stage near Kalmady's Bobbariya Paje-500 meter extension, and 100 meters at Padekere. In the first week of July, a group from Central Institute of Coastal Engineering for Fisheries (CICEF) will inspect the location of the fourth stage. This project has been granted by the centre and the state government.

"A total of Rs 122 crore has been estimated for the fourth stage while Rs 3.10 crore has been estimated for Kodi Kanyana and Hangar Katte ports at 100 meter extension, and Rs 1 crore for the breakwater at Gangolli at 60 meter extension," he said.

MLA Pramod Madhwaraj and city council president Yuvaraj were present during the visit.
