According to the villagers, Rama Murthy reportedly asked his uncle Muniyappa to get his daughter married to him. Muniyappa however was reluctant about the proposal. On Sunday night, Rama Murthy was waiting in his uncle’s house, when Muniyappa and his wife Venkatamma reached home late after attending a marriage in the locality.
Rama Murthy reportedly demanded that he accept the marriage proposal. When Muniyappa sought time, a heated argument ensued. Rama Murthy allegedly locked the room from the inside and began assaulting the aged couple. He dragged his uncle to a room and attacked him with a weapon killing him on the spot. He later dumped ragi and floor sacks to hide the body. He also assaulted Venkatamma, who sustained a serious head injury. During the attack, both victims called out for help and the villagers immediately informed the police.
SP Hilori said the police, who arrived at the spot, asked Rama Murthy to surrender but to no avail. Although the police tried to ease the situation by using teargas shells, Rama Murthy was defiant.
The police made attempts to arrest him, but he assaulted head constable Narayanaswamy with a chopper. He later snatched a rifle from a police constable and threatened the police. A constable opened fire in self-defence.
Sensing further trouble, Kolar Rural Police Station, Circle Inspector A B Sudhakara opened fire at him. He was immediately shifted to Jalappa Hospital and later to Victoria in Bangalore where he succumbed to his injuries, said Hilori.
Both head constable Narayanaswamy and Muniyappa’s wife Venkatamma are recovering at Kolar Hospital. Kolar Rural Police have registered a case.
