Mangalore: Media key to establishing healthy society: Nalin Kumar

Mangalore, Jun 8: "The media plays a key role in establishing a healthy society and contributes a great deal towards the development of the country," said MP Nalin Kumar Kateel during the Press Club Day celebration.

The DK district working journalists' union (DKDJWU) and Partika Bhavan Trust, Mallikatta on Saturday June 7 celebrated Press Club Day in a meaningful manner at Lions Seva Mandir, Mallikatta here.

After inaugurating the programme, Nalin Kateel said, "Press is a medium to voice the views and grievances of the public. The media since its birth has been alerting the elected representatives about developmental works across the country. Though journalists work under pressure of deadlines all the time, it is heartwarming to see all of you take time off to celebrate this day together. This will build good rapport among journalists."

Film actor and national award-winning director Shivadhwaj was the chief guest.

Daijiworld's ace photojournalist Dayanand Kukkaje was honoured by health and family welfare minister U T Khadar for his achievements in the field of journalism. He also felicitated other journalists who won awards from various associations in the year 2013. 

In his address, Khadar said that the journalists of Dakshina Kannada have their own identity and have earned respect through their work. "Impartial and objective reporting should be the goal of any journalist," he advised.

The children of journalists were felicitated for securing top marks in the recent SSLC and PUC examinations. Senior journalist Manohar Prasad conveyed best wishes to them on behalf of the gathering.

Journalists who won in various competitions held prior to Press Club Day were given prizes. 

DKDJWU president P B Harish Rai welcomed the gathering, while Press Club president Ramakrishna R proposed the vote of thanks. Naresh Sasihitlu compered.

Press Club chief secretary Kiran Sarsikar, Patrika Bhavan Trust president B Raveendra and others were present.

    Indeed media is the prime source of information. What is good to see is that media is not controlled or ordered by any one and media today is transparent. Daijiworld has become a very important source of information and contain realistic information. Both Walter and Stephen who are the key persons are fearless writers projecting the true image of prevailing situations or for that matter news about people.

    It is good to see that media and people enjoy today FREEDOM OF PRESS AND FREEDOM OF SPEECH.
